The room was a wreck, but neither of them cared. Not anymore. Sweat slicked their skin, tangling their limbs together like vines in an unbreakable knot. Kai was sprawled across the bed, his body still humming from the intensity of Adrian's claim. His chest rose and fell in shallow breaths, the aftermath of their passion settling like a dense fog around them. Adrian, on the other hand, wasn't quite as content. His mind raced, thoughts swirling around like a storm, and he couldn't shake the tension. Not yet. The danger was still out there, lingering like a shadow he couldn't outrun.
"I've got you," Kai murmured, sensing the shift. He curled into Adrian, his small frame fitting so perfectly against Adrian's larger one. "Whatever's coming... I'll face it with you."
Adrian's fingers trembled as he stroked Kai's hair, but his gaze was distant, cold even, though his body pressed closer, instinctively protective. "You don't understand, Kai. You have no idea how far I'm willing to go to keep you safe."
"Then let me help you," Kai whispered, pushing up on his elbow so he could look Adrian in the eye. There was a quiet strength in the omega's gaze now, one that made Adrian's chest ache. "I'm not some fragile little thing to protect. I can help you fight whatever comes."
Adrian's jaw clenched. The vulnerability in Kai's eyes pulled at him fiercely but there was still that gnawing hunger inside, the overwhelming desire to shield him from everything, to keep him wrapped in safety, cocooned in his arms. It was instinct, something primal that burned through his veins, but Kai had a fire of his own.
"You're right," Adrian said softly. "You're not fragile." His fingers tightened around Kai's wrist, pulling him in for a kiss that was slow, searching, full of promises that neither of them had voiced. "But you are mine. And I will do whatever it takes to keep you that way."
Kai smirked, a teasing glint in his eyes. "I don't need keeping, Adrian. I'm not some pet you can lock away."
The words struck harder than Adrian had expected. It wasn't that he didn't know what Kai meant, but hearing it aloud sent a wave of emotions crashing over him pride, possessiveness, and something deeper. It wasn't love, not yet but it was something undeniable. And just as terrifying.
"I'm not locking you away," Adrian growled, his voice low, barely controlled. "I'm claiming what's mine."
Kai smiled, a sly, predatory curve to his lips. "Then don't think for one second I won't bite back."
The challenge hung in the air between them, thick and electric, but before Adrian could respond, a distant, ominous knock echoed through the apartment. It was too heavy, too deliberate to be any innocent visitor. Adrian froze, his blood running cold.
Kai tensed beside him, his eyes flashing with the same understanding. The calm before the storm had ended, and they were no longer alone in the quiet sanctuary they'd carved out for themselves. Someone was watching, someone was waiting.
Without a word, Adrian reached over, pulling his shirt back on, the action swift and practiced. His fingers trembled slightly, but the mask of cold indifference was back in place. He didn't have time for feelings right now. Not when danger was knocking at their door.
"Stay behind me," Adrian ordered, voice steely. "No matter what, don't make a sound."
Kai nodded, but the fiery glint in his eyes didn't diminish. If anything, it sharpened. He wasn't some helpless bystander in Adrian's world. He wasn't going to hide.
Adrian moved to the door, his hand wrapped around the cool metal of his blade. His heart beat in his throat, each thump louder than the last. He knew what this was. Knew who was behind that door.
The vampires were coming.
And this time, they weren't going to wait for Adrian to come to them.
With a swift motion, Adrian opened the door.
But no one was there.
The hallway was empty. The darkness was thick and suffocating, like the air itself had been poisoned. Adrian's instincts screamed at him to stay alert, to be ready. He stepped out, scanning the shadows, his every nerve on edge.
"Adrian," Kai's voice came from behind him, soft but filled with tension. "I can feel it. Something's wrong."
The moment the words left his lips, the atmosphere shifted. The air around them grew thicker, colder. Then, from the darkness, something emerged a figure cloaked in shadows.
"Did you think you could run forever, Adrian?" the figure hissed, its voice a low, guttural growl. "You can't hide from what's coming. You'll both burn."
Adrian didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, blade drawn, but the figure was faster. It moved with the kind of speed only a vampire possessed, a blur in the dark. The figure struck claws raking across Adrian's arm, the wound burning with an unnatural heat.
Adrian hissed, the pain shooting through his veins, but he didn't stop. He couldn't. Not when Kai was in danger.
Behind him, Kai stood frozen, eyes wide. The figure's attention flicked to him, and Adrian felt a cold knot of fear settle deep in his chest.
"Don't you dare touch him," Adrian snarled, his grip tightening on the hilt of his blade.
The vampire just grinned, revealing sharp fangs. "Oh, but I think it's time to remind you of who really owns the world you walk in, Adrian."
