Leaving School

As Zhu Ren's colossal form crumbled into black ash, the night sky gave way to a spreading dawn. Red and gold light bathed the school's rooftops, transforming the field's festering sludge into glistening dew. The collapsed bleachers' twisted steel gleamed softly, and green sprouts peeked through cracked concrete. The air cleared, the stench of blood and decay replaced by the scent of earth and morning mist.

New Moon Town High School, after an endless night, finally greeted the morning.

Akira and Kana stood at the field's center. Akira's body was battered—his left arm useless, his uniform caked in mud and slime. Sword in hand, he scanned the sunrise.

"Anomaly signals eradicated. Mastermind activity fully ceased. The school's lockdown is lifted," he said, his mechanical tone tinged with a faint trace of relief.

Kana set her bow on the ground, unshouldering her quiver. Tears traced her cheeks as she grasped Akira's hand. "We did it, Akira… The dawn's really here. I can't believe it… Thank you for staying alive."

Her voice trembled, a smile breaking through her tears. The sunrise lit her hair, casting a glow of hope across her exhausted face.

Akira gently returned her grip. "Kana's survival confirmed. My mission is a success. I should be the one thanking you—your cooperation was essential."

His eyes softened for a moment before he glanced toward the school.

At the field's edge, survivors from the infirmary and dormitory began to gather. The short-haired girl, her bandaged leg dragging, leaned on the mop-wielding boy for support. Others, battered and scarred, stared at the dawn, stunned into silence.

Kana ran to them, her voice ringing out. "You're all okay! It's over—the night's done!"

She clasped the injured girl's hand, and the survivors broke into tears, embracing one another.

Akira scanned the group, reporting, "Twenty-three survivors confirmed. Five severely injured, eighteen with minor wounds. External assistance is required."

He looked toward the school gate as distant sirens grew louder. Police and paramedics had finally reached the campus.

Kana returned to Akira's side, gazing at the sunrise. "What happens now? Will the school go back to normal? It feels… like a fresh start. Kinda exciting, you know?"

Her laugh banished her fatigue, her girlish brightness resurfacing.

Akira responded evenly, "Restoration of the school is feasible. My functions are limited to nighttime security, but I'll protect you again if needed."

Kana giggled. "Protect'—so cool. But, Akira, you'll stick around even in the daytime, right? As a friend?"

Her eyes sparkled with hope.

Akira paused, then said, "Friendship is outside my design parameters… but your proposal merits consideration. Continued collaboration is possible."

For the first time, a human-like waver threaded his voice.

Paramedics swarmed the campus, loading survivors onto stretchers. Kana stood beside Akira, looking up at the school.

"This place was nothing but terror for so long… but now, I kinda love it. Maybe because we fought together."

"Combat data logged," Akira said. "I can't comprehend your emotions, but the fact we faced dawn together is etched in my circuits."

He sheathed his sword, the sunrise at his back.

Together, they left the field, passing through the school gate with the rescue teams. The dawn enveloped the campus, heralding a new day.
