At night, I slept restlessly. I was somewhat excited about Xavion's proposal tomorrow, yet also felt a bit uneasy.
I still couldn't shake off what Xavion had said to Harlow, but I didn't dare to question him about it.
I was afraid that the love I had carefully nurtured for three years would shatter the moment I asked.
When I woke up, Xavion was no longer in the room. I saw the message he left on my phone,
'Come to the beach boardwalk at 2 PM. I have a surprise for you.'
With a heart full of joy, I arrived at the beach a bit early and saw Xavion's back in a white shirt. It warmed my heart.
Then I heard Harlow's voice,
"Are you really that happy about being proposed to by a lapdog I rejected?"
The voice coming from behind made me involuntarily shudder. I turned around to see Harlow with a mocking smile on her face.
I took a step back, distancing myself from her,
"You don't even like him. Why can't you stand to see Xavion and me together? Won't your fiancé be upset if he finds out?"
Harlow didn't look at me. Her gaze remained fixed on Xavion as she said maliciously,
"A lapdog who's been licking my boots for over a decade suddenly goes to lick someone else's. Of course I'm pissed. Can you believe it?"Even if I'm married, with just a crook of my finger, Xavion would still come running back to me like a dog."
Harlow's words made my head throb with anger. Just as I was about to retort, she pulled out her phone.
"Xavion, I'm not feeling well. Can you take me to the hospital?"
I whipped my head around to look at Xavion's back as he answered the call. Perhaps still holding out hope for him, I didn't want to expose Harlow's ploy.
Harlow put the call on speaker, and Xavion's voice came through clearly from her phone.
"What's wrong? I'm tied up here and can't leave. Can you wait a bit?"
Hearing Xavion's response, I felt a fleeting sense of relief, followed by a deep, bone-chilling sadness. But Harlow wasn't done yet.
"But my stomach hurts so badly. I'm in real pain, Xavion."
I saw the look of determination in Harlow's eyes, and then came Xavion's response that made my blood run cold.
"Don't worry, I'm coming over right now."
Harlow hung up and flashed me a blinding smile.
"I'm heading out now. Oh, and Merry Christmas. When I'm done with Xavion, I'll hand him back to you.""After all, you have no parents, which is quite pitiful."
Harlow's words froze me in place. The fact that both my parents had died in an accident was something only Xavion knew about.
My deepest wound was now being used by Harlow as a knife to humiliate me, and this knife had been handed to her by Xavion.
This realization made my whole body tremble. I don't remember how long I stood there in the sea breeze. The sudden ring of my phone snapped me back to reality.
I numbly took out my phone. It was Xavion.
"Delia, where are you? I'm sorry, I got held up with something urgent. I'm coming to find you now."
The time on my phone showed it was already 3:30 in the afternoon. I moved my legs, which had gone somewhat numb.
Looking up, I saw Xavion running towards me, his forehead covered in sweat. He pulled me into his arms, and my chilled body began to warm up in his embrace.
Xavion kept apologizing. I raised my hand and clutched his clothes tightly, almost pleading as I spoke,
"Will you always stay with me?"
Xavion's body noticeably tensed for a moment, then he stroked my hair with his warm hand.
