Chapter 4

He locked himself in the P4 lab for a full three days.

On the fourth day, I broke down the door, only to find a letter.

"Vivienne is the only light in my life. If she falls, what meaning is there left for me to live?"

"I hope in the next life, we can reunite in a better laboratory."

It turned out he had injected himself with the virus-infected serum, following Vivienne into death.

My heart instantly turned cold.

So when I was reborn and he wanted to follow Vivienne to Africa, I chose to let go.

I was grateful for this second chance at life, to start anew.

I turned to leave.

But Vivienne blocked my path, looking down her nose at me:

"Serenity, just look at that lab coat of yours, you can't even get rid of the smell of disinfectant!"

"Are you really doing that badly?"

"Do you want me to ask Zoran to arrange a janitor position for you in the lab?"

"Dr. Winters is so kind," a researcher sucking up to Zoran chimed in.

He looked at me with contempt:

"Even janitors at Harvard labs make $500,000 a year!"

"A third-rate researcher like you probably can't earn that much in a lifetime, can you?"

"Hurry up and thank Dr. Winters!"I stared at him with impatience flashing in my eyes:

"I have my own research. I don't need any handouts."

Vivienne, however, persisted relentlessly:

"You're not making this up, are you?"

"What kind of research?"

"Virus experiments."

Upon hearing this, Zoran, who had been silent until now, suddenly looked up with a complex expression.

"Virus experiments?"

He repeated softly, and after a moment of silence, he said meaningfully:

"I only mentioned liking virus research in passing back then. I can't believe you took it seriously."

"Well, for old times' sake, I can let you be my assistant."

I was taken aback for a moment.

Then I realized he had misunderstood.

He must think I went into virus research because of him.

The truth is, after my rebirth, I discovered all my savings had been invested in lab equipment.

Rather than waste it, I decided to continue the research.

Gradually, I fell in love with this field.

Over the years, my research has gained international recognition.

Major laboratories frequently invite me for academic exchanges.

My annual income far exceeds that of Zoran, the Harvard expert.

But I couldn't be bothered to explain.

After all, he never truly understood me.

Besides...

I looked down at my lab coat.

It was indeed a bit messy, but I had just come from the P4 lab when I was called to this meeting. There's no need to rush changing into protective gear.

But what does it matter anyway?

I gazed coolly at Zoran:

"I love viral research and will continue to pursue it. No need to concern yourself."

Hearing this, Zoran's expression darkened.

"Serenity, why must you be so stubborn?"

"Forget it, darling. Don't bother with that woman," Vivienne urged.

Just then, the lab assistant suddenly pointed at me and shouted:

"Thief!"

"Is that protective suit stolen?"

"Impossible. This is mine," I said with a frown.

"Nonsense! This is military-grade protective gear!"

"Someone like you wouldn't even have access to these materials!"
