"What's my specialty in lab techniques?"
"Who's the scientist I admire most?"
With each question, Zoran's face grew more and more troubled.
By the end, he couldn't even look me in the eye!
"Zoran, give it up. Stop clinging to this."
"Why?" His eyes were filled with resentment.
"Just because Rockefeller has more resources and status than me?"
"Yes!" I shot back without mercy.
"And not only does he have more resources and status, he's also more sincere and devoted!"
"He loves me and always puts my research first."
"That's enough."
Zoran stood there frozen, as if all the life had been sucked out of him in an instant, completely deflated.
I couldn't be bothered to deal with him anymore and turned to leave the lab.
The next time I heard about him was at an academic conference.
"Poor Zoran, such a brilliant researcher ruined by a woman!"
"Yeah, I don't know what he was thinking, entrusting core data to an outsider."
