LIORA'S POV;
I couldn’t believe this was happening. Watching Becky, my best friend, practically collapse in tears was tearing me apart. She kept reaching for tissue after tissue, her red-rimmed eyes staring at the pile she’d made.
“I cannot believe this is happening to me,” she muttered, discarding another crumpled tissue.
She looked at me, her voice breaking. “I practically saw all the signs, you know? But I was so stupid. I ignored them—all because of his job, and how he was supposedly always busy.” She buried her face in her hands, shoulders slumping. “How could I let this happen?”
“Hey, listen,” I said, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Sometimes we have to pay attention to those warning signs. Ignoring them doesn’t make you stupid, just hopeful. And it doesn’t mean you were wrong to trust him.”
Becky took a deep, shuddering breath, wiping her eyes. “I’m done with men. Done with love,” she said, the words barely a whisper, like the decision weighed her down even more.
