He circled my chair like a predator stalking his prey, the click of his expensive shoes against the polished floor resonating in the room. His body hovered behind me, a dark shadow that seemed to swallow me. I could practically feel his hot breath on my neck as he leaned in closer, his hands resting on head rest of my chair.
"You’ve made three grave mistakes, Aubrey," he murmured, his voice dripping with menace and malice. The low, threatening tone sent chills down my spine. “First, you dared to ask for a divorce when I gave you a life most could only dream of. Second, you kept the news of my child from me. And third..." His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper as he pressed his lips to my ear. "Third, you ran away while you were still my wife.”
My body tensed at his words. Three years of hardening myself against him couldn't be undone by a few whispered threats.
