—-----------Aubrey’s pov—----------
I walked toward the door, my heart pounded when I heard him call out, his voice softer than I’d expected. “Aubrey, wait!”
I stopped, but I didn’t turn. If I turned, I might break again, and I had no pieces left to break. My shoulders stiffened, a wall going up between us, as thick and impenetrable as the years of lies and betrayals I had endured. I heard him come closer, and a bitter part of me wished he would just let me go.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, and I almost laughed at how plain his voice sounded. How desperate. But sorry wasn’t enough.
I turned, finally, and met his gaze. The regret in his eyes should have brought me some satisfaction, but all I felt was a numbness deep inside me.
My voice cracked like ice. “Sorry?” The word tasted bitter in my mouth. “What exactly are you sorry for, Ryder? For cheating on me? Or for killing our child? Or for what we did last night?”
