Chapter 29

Emily’s voice took on a light, teasing tone as she responded, "I think you’re forgetting something, Maria. I’m still his wife. If not me, who else would accompany Nicholas?"

On purpose, Emily slid closer to Nicholas, wrapping her arm around his. She could feel Maria’s eyes narrowing in frustration. Nicholas, caught off guard at first, quickly understood what Emily was doing—provoking Maria.

With a smooth motion, Nicholas played along. He wrapped his arm around Emily’s waist, pulling her firmly against his chest. His grip was possessive, as if to signal to Maria that Emily was his and no one else’s. Emily’s heart skipped a beat, but she kept her composure, meeting Maria’s glare with an amused smile.

"Of course," Nicholas finally spoke, his voice calm yet firm, "Emily is my wife. It only makes sense she’s here with me."

Maria’s eyes darkened, tears welling up as her forced smile faltered. She was not accustomed to seeing Nicholas so protective of Emily, especially in front of her.
