Chapter 161

"Nicholas, I’m so scared," she sobbed, burying her face in his chest.

Nicholas wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly as she trembled against him. He rested his chin on her head, his hand gently stroking her back to calm her.

“I’m here,” he whispered. “I won’t let anything happen to you or Nikon. I promise.”

Emily clung to him as though he was her only lifeline. “This is my fault. I should have been more careful. I should have kept him safer.”

Nicholas pulled back slightly, cupping her face in his hands so she would look at him. “Stop blaming yourself, Emily. None of this is your fault.” His voice was firm but filled with compassion. “Whoever did this is going to pay. I’ll make sure of it.”

Nicholas guided Emily over to the sofa near the window. He sat down, pulling her gently onto his lap. Emily buried her face in his chest, her sobs shaking her body. Nicholas didn’t say anything; he just held her close, letting her cry as much as she needed.
