Chapter 6

However, just when Lu Mingjun was on high alert, Jiang Xinxin didn't ask any professional questions at all. Instead, she started chatting about Professor Jiang's gossip.

Lu Mingjun: I was so nervous that my palms were sweating, and you just wanted to talk about gossip?

So… were all law firm interviews in S City this casual? Lu Mingjun wasn't sure.

Even after hanging up the phone, she still felt uneasy.

She didn't know whether Director Jiang was satisfied with their little chat.

If she wasn't satisfied, did that mean she wouldn't want her anymore?

But apparently, Director Jiang liked her quite a bit. Just ten minutes after they hung up, she sent an offer.

What's more, it seemed she already knew Lu Mingjun was short on money. She even said that the law firm would cover the travel expenses for her move to S City.

Only then did Lu Mingjun breathe a sigh of relief. Well… it turns out gossiping paid off!

With that, her mission was complete.

Lu Mingjun relaxed, closed her laptop with a snap, grabbed her meal card, and headed out.

The starting date agreed upon with Director Jiang was July 7th. Before then, Lu Mingjun needed to find a suitable place to live in S City—and also use up the remaining 15 yuan on her cafeteria meal card!

Walking down the path to the cafeteria, the breeze gently brushed her cheeks, carrying the scent of summer.

She enjoyed this rare moment of peace and soon arrived at the cafeteria entrance.

W University's cafeteria was wonderful. Standing at the door, Lu Mingjun was already drawn in by the smell of food.

After skillfully ordering one meat dish and two vegetable dishes, she watched 3.5 yuan get deducted from her card and began planning a more luxurious meal for tomorrow.

At least two meat dishes!

After dinner, Lu Mingjun didn't return to the dorm right away. Instead, she wandered around campus aimlessly.

She had already researched rental options in S City Park, where Xinxing Law Firm was located.

After checking her card balance—just over 6,000 yuan—Lu Mingjun quickly gave up on the idea of renting a place alone.

Of course, this money wasn't given to her by Mother Lu. It was all earned through project work with her mentor over the years.

If not for the small projects Professor Jiang occasionally gave her, Lu Mingjun might've become the first W University student to starve to death!

Mother Lu was never a competent mother.

Now, Lu Mingjun clearly understood that her mother had always viewed her as a bargaining chip.

On one hand, she spent the Lu family's money to gain face in front of Mr. Zhu, forcing him to show her respect.

On the other, she emotionally and morally manipulated Lu Mingjun, using the excuse of "enduring hardship" for her daughter's sake to maintain her image of noble sacrifice.

It could be said that Mother Lu had become an expert at building a virtuous persona over the years.

But anyway—back to the topic!

With the money she had, Lu Mingjun could barely afford a single room.

According to local rental rates in S City Park, a master bedroom cost about 1,800 yuan per month. The second bedroom and the smaller north-facing room were around 1,000 and 800 yuan respectively.

After much deliberation, Lu Mingjun decided to go with the north-facing room.

So what if there's no sunlight? She'd be getting up early and staying up late anyway. Sunlight didn't matter!

Thinking about her future—living far away from W City and her original family—Lu Mingjun felt invigorated.

She stopped wandering, returned to her dorm, and began packing.

During this time, she also browsed several rental listings near the law firm.

With ten years of rental experience under her belt, she believed it would only take a day to choose the best one and move in.

She contacted an agent and arranged to send her luggage to their office two days in advance.

The agent didn't give the newly graduated student any trouble and agreed right away.

And so, after a month of preparation, Lu Mingjun finally packed up all her belongings and sent them to the address the agent provided.

On her last day in W City, she made a point to buy two bags of fruit and went to visit Professor Jiang.

Looking at his little disciple, Professor Jiang sighed.

He pulled her aside and said a lot—from filial piety to independence—but his message was clear:No matter how filial you are, you should never sacrifice yourself.

Embarrassed by his words, Lu Mingjun fled, covered in dust and regret.

Still, she was deeply touched by his care.

Time flew by, and before she knew it, it was the day she was to leave campus and head to S City.

She woke up early, washed up, had one last breakfast in the cafeteria, then left W University with her luggage.

She turned and took one last look at the place where she had spent seven years of her youth.

Then she turned away, boarding the train to S City.

Watching the scenery change outside the window, Lu Mingjun made a silent vow:

When I return to W City… it will be time for certain people to repay their debts.
