Demi-Humans × Magical Beasts × Cleanup

Joey had always known that in the world of Hunter x Hunter, there were Demi-Human species and Magical Beasts intelligent enough to communicate and coexist with humans.

What he didn't understand, however, was where all these strange species came from.

So when Kite launched into an impromptu lesson, Joey perked up and asked the question on his mind:

"Are all these Demi-Human races the result of mutations from Contained Species?"

Kite poked the dirt with a rabbit leg bone. "Yes and no."

He hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Remember that book I told you about? The New World Exploration Log? Where do you think this 'New World' is? And where do you think species like Chimera Ants — official Contained Species — even come from?"

Without waiting for Joey's reply, Kite went on, "The world we humans live in is just a small portion — a corner of a region known as Lake Mobius. Beyond the lake... lies a world far vaster, far more dangerous."

His eyes gleamed.

"That place is the Dark Continent — the real 'New World' that the book describes. It's a place of Magical Beasts, Lost Technologies, Calamities, and Ancient Relics. If you want to truly understand this world, you can't avoid exploring the Dark Continent."

"But reaching it?" Kite gave a dry chuckle. "You need a contract, methods, qualifications, and clearance. Even the most elite Hunters might spend decades before they meet all the conditions."

There was a far-off look in his eyes, like a man who'd stared into the abyss and wanted more.

Kite continued, "As for Magical Beasts and Demi-Humans — aside from the few native to unexplored regions — the majority are remnants. Brought back from the Dark Continent. They're the wreckage of failed expeditions."

"Chimera Ants, the Swinefolk, the Burrowers, the Fanged Ones... I'm no anthropologist, but even the V5 has dossiers on their existence."

Joey kept feeding the fire, listening, but made no move to comment.

The Dark Continent?

Hard pass.

Even if he hadn't inherited Kira Yoshikage's mindset, he had no intention of risking life and limb for that hellscape.

Lake Mobius was scenic. The Dark Continent could stay forgotten, thank you very much.

That said, Joey was mildly interested in certain Demi-Humans.

If he could find a horse girl, cat-eared lady, or bunny girl, maybe he'd reconsider his stance...

He didn't push the conversation further.

Instead, he started asking Kite about aura training, advanced Nen concepts, and how he might improve his use of Stands — though even Kite had trouble helping him there.

Because truthfully, Joey suspected something was off.

Stands and Nen weren't the same.

And Killer Queen — his Stand — wasn't showing its true potential.

He was starting to suspect he was limiting it subconsciously.

But what was the nature of that limitation?

He didn't yet know.

By the time he opened his eyes again, the sun had risen.

Kite and Andre had already departed — not that Joey had expected any less. Even while sleeping, his hunter instincts kept him semi-aware. He never fully relaxed.

Before breakfast, his first "warm-up delivery" arrived.

A Chimera Ant soldier — courtesy of Kite.

The following three days passed in a blur of battles, with Joey constantly fighting new Ants being funneled through the Solitary Confinement Room.

In this time, his understanding of Stands evolved.

They weren't Nen constructs. They existed outside the system.

And he'd been treating them like they weren't.

Killer Queen hadn't even been operating at full strength. Joey was starting to realize he'd been holding it back — unconsciously.

But what kind of restriction had he placed? That, he still didn't know.

When Andre's waving hand appeared inside the Solitary Confinement Room, Joey was already prepared. No excess gear remained. Just faint blood stains marked the ground.

He shouldered his pack and stepped through the portal.

When he emerged, he stood atop a steep cliff.

Andre was sitting nearby, scanning the horizon with binoculars.

"Kite's clearing out a cluster of Ants. Wait here."

Joey followed his gaze.

What he saw stunned him.

Limbs, viscera, trails of gore.

And a blur slicing through the forest like a reaper in fast-forward.

Every Chimera Ant — no matter how well-armored, how unique their ability — disintegrated on contact.

It was a slaughter.

This was the first time Joey had truly felt the enormous gulf between himself and Kite.

Last time, he'd seen the giant scythe once — but that was nothing compared to this display.

Now, Kite's Crazy Slots weapon was switching forms mid-fight:

A death-dance with a scythe.

Precision shots with a rifle.

Explosive devastation from a cannon.

Flash-speed slashes from a katana.

Ripping claws.

Even a magical wand delivering instant death via some unknown effect.

Randomized. Unpredictable. Unstoppable.

His aura flowed like liquid, shifting smoothly between Shu, Ren, Ken, Flow, In — techniques woven into every movement.

Even barehanded, he could eviscerate Chimera Ants with kicks and punches.

Close-quarters, ranged, solo or multi-target — it didn't matter. Kite excelled at all of it.

"They call it elegant, but this? This is Kite," Andre said with awe. "A true All-Terrain Hunter."

"If you and the boys hadn't come along, Kite probably would've gone through NG-L solo, like usual."

"You don't usually team up with him?" Joey managed, eyes glued to the battlefield.

"Not unless he pays me," Andre grinned. "Kite prefers solo ops. Even his backup crew? Just scientists and assistants. I'm his 'backpack' when coin's good."

"Kite says he wants to be a 'self-sufficient' Hunter. But hell, from where I'm standing? He's already there."

As Andre spoke, Kite finished his massacre and waved from the treeline.

"Oh yeah — now that you're here, I don't have to do cleanup," Andre clapped Joey on the back with mock cheer.

"Cleanup?" Joey frowned.

"Used to relay the corpses back to the Pata City Bioresearch Division. Got some cash for it."

"But they're overloaded now. Too many samples. They don't even want dead ones anymore."

"And alive ones? You don't want that headache. Unless you plan to fight Ants again later... don't sell to them."

He tapped his wallet knowingly.

Joey groaned.

Sure, Killer Queen was great at battlefield cleanup — but this? Kite's leftovers were in shreds.

"Is this really necessary?" Joey muttered.

"Understanding the anatomy of magical creatures is vital to becoming a top-tier Hunter," Kite said, suddenly beside them.

"Pick some intact ones. Study them. Especially while you're still working on that difference between erasure and detonation. You're right — Erasure drains stamina, and if you don't get a handle on it, you'll burn out fast."

Kite tossed him a sealed box.

Inside: latex gloves and a surgical scalpel.

"Good luck, doc."
