The halls of the Arcanist's Academy buzzed with excitement and envy as the Royal Class Rankings shimmered on the golden crystal board. Students huddled in disbelief, gossiping, pointing—mostly at the seventh name:
Kleez – "The Catastrophic Charmer"
Even now, Kleez was posing next to his own name, blowing kisses at thin air.
But then, without much warning, the announcement dropped like a quiet thunder.
> [Notice to All Students:]
The Academy will now remain closed for the next 15 days for the Mid-Semester Holidays.
Guardians and noble escorts will arrive shortly to take students home.
Just like that, laughter dimmed. Trunks were packed, hugs exchanged, and noble carriages rolled in through the golden gates.
Zen stood under the shade of a quiet tree, watching students rush into their family's arms.
One by one, friends were swept away—Elvern, Fiora, Arisella. Sylvia gave a polite nod and vanished with her sword-toting aunt. Even Kleez was dragged off by a man yelling, "You set my roses on fire again?!"
Zen just smiled.
Quietly.
Alone.
> [System: …Zen. Your face muscle is twitching. That's not your usual smile.]
"Shush," he whispered. "Don't ruin the mood."
> [System: Noted. Activating Emotional Comfort Mode. Suggestion: Hug tree. 3% effectiveness.]
But then…
"Lyra! Over here."
A voice-refined and familiar-echoed. Kien Caelivara, tall, calm, with a noble's grace and a knowing gaze, walked toward them. Zen felt the air shift.
Lyra looked like she was five emotions at once. She didn't move. Not immediately.
"I'll be back soon," she said, eyes fixed on Zen. Her voice cracked slightly.
Zen offered the warmest, fakest grin he could summon. "Of course. I've got people too. Probably. Somewhere."
She frowned.
"You're lying."
"Maybe."
Kien stood nearby, watching the exchange with that "big brother reads everything" look.
"You the one making my sister blush lately?"
Zen blinked. "That's a baseless—"
"Good." Kien nodded. "Make her happy, or I'll burn your kneecaps off."
"…sure"
Lyra hugged Zen suddenly. Tighter than expected.
"I'll miss you."
"I'll be here," Zen whispered. "Go. Be safe."
She pulled away slowly, still glancing back even as she left through the gates with Kien.
And just like that…
The world got quieter.
Too quiet.
> [System: Everyone is gone. Now it's just us. And the wind. And possibly that squirrel.]
Zen chuckled.
"Let's walk."
