Chapter Twenty-Four: A Plea, A Promise, A Miracle and A downfall

The room felt heavier than ever as Ava spoke with the doctor. Her hands trembled slightly as she stared at the floor, trying to convince herself she was doing the right thing.

"Yes, I do," Ava said quietly to the doctor, her voice nearly lost in the sterile silence of the room.

"I'm kind of a drifter," she went on, almost as if she needed to hear the words out loud to make sense of them.

"I don't really have a stable home."

Her throat tightened.

"So I don't really feel confident to raise a baby yet."

Her eyes looked down, blinking back the tears.

"And if I can't provide a stable home, I don't really think it's fair for me to bring it into the world," she concluded, her voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor nodded, his face gentle but unreadable.

"Alright, then follow me."
