Chapter 7: Insufficient Funds

I tried to train a farmer, but was told I didn't have enough gold.

Galen recalled that the room that looked like a storage room next door should be used to store resources, so he went to the storage room, took out a bag of gold coins from the magical cloth bag, and put it on the shelf.

The moment the bag was placed on the shelf, a flash of light appeared, and the bag shrank at a speed visible to the naked eye.

When Galen returned to the room and connected to the Town Hall again, he found that the amount of gold in the resource column had increased from zero to one hundred.

It seems that the ratio of gold coins in the human world to the gold in the base is one to two hundred.

Galen immediately gave the order to train a farmer. The shadow of a farmer appeared on the host interface, followed by a countdown to the completion time: 59 minutes and 59 seconds. It takes an hour to train a farmer. I wonder how long it takes to train a soldier in a barracks?

While waiting, Galen put half of his gold coins into the storage room. The farmer's introduction includes the skills of collecting gold and wood. In the future, the base's resources will mainly depend on the farmer to collect resources, so Galen imagined his behavior of putting gold coins as: successful recharge, gold + unit.

Observing the 20,000 units of gold displayed in the resource column, Galen gave orders to continue producing 11 farmers, directly completing the production queue.

During the difficult wait, a light flashed in the room, and a figure walked out of the main hall. It was a middle-aged man, over 180 cm tall, with broad shoulders and a thick waist. He wore a linen singlet and a red shirt, with an axe and a pickaxe hanging on each side of his waist. His skin was slightly dark, with a thick brown beard on his chin, and he looked weather-beaten.

When the farmer came out, he saw Galen sitting in the hall and immediately saluted him: "Militia Captain Cliff greets you, Commander." Hearing his words, Galen was stunned, surprised that this farmer was so intelligent. He thought that the units trained in the base would be dull and mechanical and would only perform rigid actions according to orders.

Galen walked around him and asked, "Cliff, can you introduce yourself?"

"Commander, I can mine, chop wood, build houses, make repairs, and engage in simple combat. My position is militia captain, and I can also conduct basic military training. I will be in charge of the farmers who come later. Commander, please give the order."

"If I want you to go mining, do you know where there are mineral deposits nearby?" Galen was very curious. In the game, there is a gold mine next to the base at the beginning, and the location of this base was chosen by him. He didn't care about the nearby mineral deposits and simply opted for secrecy.

"Report to the Commander: according to the base core's scan, there are rich mineral veins in the mountains to the east. We can mine them from our current position in the northern mountains." Hearing this, Galen immediately connected to the core. Sure enough, he saw a circle of golden marks on the map, and the location seemed to be on the eastern line of the Alterac Mountains.

"The commander can remotely connect to the core to give us instructions, and upgrading the hall can extend the distance of the remote connection." The labor team leader, Cliff, then gave Galen another surprise.

Originally, Galen was still worried about how to return to the base after tonight. After all, he didn't have many soundproofing barrier scrolls left. If there was no soundproofing scroll, then since Omar and Varokar were stronger than him, he would have no way to sneak out of the camp without alerting both of them.

Now I can finally breathe a sigh of relief. I can still see my camp on the edge of the map, so this distance should be enough to remotely connect to the core.

Looking at Cliff in front of him, Galen gave the order to chop down trees. Cliff immediately pulled the axe from his waist and walked out of the hall.

Galen followed him and took a look at the trees surrounding the courtyard: "Cliff, when the other farmers arrive, chop down all the trees within a 500-meter radius around this hall." He planned to clear the area and make room for the construction of other buildings.

Close your eyes and connect to view the buildings you can build: Barracks, Lumber Mill, Blacksmith, Farm, Altar of Kings, Watch Tower, and Secret Vault. Not enough wood is currently available to build the next structure.

After waiting in the hall for three hours and constantly looking at the introductions of various buildings, three farmers appeared. Galen asked them to follow Cliff to chop wood and obey his command.

I looked at the resources needed for the barracks: 1,600 units of gold and 600 units of wood. Gold can be recharged, but wood can only be collected by farmers.

There is no major danger in this area except for trolls, so you can wait in the barracks for a while. I looked at the current data in the resource column: gold, wood 60. It just so happened that the lumber mill did not require wood, so a lumber mill could now be built. Galen decided to set up a lumber mill near the forest so that farmers would not have to waste time transporting the chopped trees back to the Town Hall.

After giving Cliff the order to build a lumber mill, Galen couldn't wait any longer there. Almost five hours had passed since he left. He must return immediately. Otherwise, when Omar and Varokar wake up in the morning, it will be difficult for Galen to explain. Exposing the base in advance is not what Galen wants.

Running towards the camp, Galen discovered that the remote connection command that Cliff mentioned actually relied on the light ball in his mind. After the Town Hall was built, the light ball did not disappear, but was still in Galen's mind. The light ball in the hall could be understood as a subsystem, a clone, or something similar to the light ball in his mind.

According to the scanned map of the base in his mind, Galen carefully avoided several groups of velociraptors and slowed down as he approached the camp.

After observing the camp from a distance, I had to return to the tent immediately because the shifts would change soon. Once again, taking advantage of the gap when the two guards turned around, he sneaked into the camp from the blind spot of their vision and entered his own tent.

With a sigh of relief, Galen carefully discarded the soundproofing material he had previously placed on Omar and Varokar's tents and then lay down peacefully.

After working all night and running dozens of kilometers back and forth, Galen still wasn't sleepy at all. Through the light ball in my mind, I connected to the image of the base and found that there were 30 more units of wood.

It took approximately one hour to return to the camp from the base. Cliff was building a lumber mill, and the remaining three farmers were chopping trees. The three people collected 30 units of wood in three hours, so the collection speed should be 10 units per person per hour.

Galen guessed that after building the lumber mill, it should be possible to research technology through it to speed up the rate at which farmers collect resources. He wondered how much it could increase after research.

The hall has twelve units of food. One farmer needs one unit of food. There are currently five farmers, and seven more can be trained. It will take seven hours to fill the twelve slots.

Galen planned to take a nap first and then give the order to build the farm after waking up at dawn.
