Chapter 28: Not Impressed

Eloise didn’t look impressed, but Caroline could see they were wearing down her resolve. Finally, she continued.

“The reason I’m hesitant to explain further isn’t that I want to keep you in the dark. If I wanted that, I would have told the headmistress of your plans long before you set foot in the archives. The fact is, while I don’t agree with the headmistress' plan to keep this from the students—specifically you, Caroline—I worry that too much information could be just as dangerous.”

“How? Isn’t knowledge power?” Aldrick asked.

“Usually, I would say yes. Prophecies are different. Just because something is prophesied doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen. Sometimes prophecies act as a warning, so steps can be taken to avoid that outcome. Which is why I’m cautious of how much I divulge. Who’s to say that by telling you what’s really going on, I’m not steering us down the path of making this prophecy a reality?”
