Chapter 3

I know this doesn't look good, but when the words "embarrassing" came out of his mouth, my heart seemed to skip a beat.

In the hospital room, he clung tightly to my clothes, his hand trembling slightly, his tone almost pleading: "Aria, believe me, how could I possibly say something like that?"

I gently pulled my clothes back, lowering my head to adjust the chain on my bag, my voice flat and cold: "Believe you?"

"Everett, you have a thousand, ten thousand ways to learn about your past, instead of grabbing me here saying 'impossible'."

With that, I turned and left.

Behind me came the sound of a cane slamming heavily on the ground, followed by him dragging his injured leg, stumbling after me.

"Aria, Aria, don't go!"

"Aria, you can't leave!"

There was a thud of something heavy falling to the ground behind me, mixed with the nurse's terrified shout and hurried footsteps: "Everett! You can't move—"

Dr. Gerald rushed over, saw me, and slowed his pace, hesitantly speaking: "You... won't stay a bit longer?"

I shook my head.

He sighed softly and nodded: "I see, after all, you two have been apart for a while now.""Well, thank you for coming to see him. I won't say much more, I need to get back to work."

He pointed towards the hospital room, then hurried away.

I stood quietly in the hallway for a moment, then turned and left.

After that, I never went to see him again.

This incident didn't cause any ripples in my life.

Doctor Gerald has been calling frequently lately, but I neither answer nor hang up. I just let it ring until the screen goes dark.

Everett and I were always meant to be two parallel lines that never intersect.

In my youth, I recklessly barged into his world, thinking it would earn me a lifetime of cherishing.

In the end, I was nothing but discarded debris.

That failed romance came at too painful a cost.

Even now, I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night from this nightmare.

Today, the company suddenly required overtime. By the time I got home, it was nearly 10 PM.

Just as I stepped out of the elevator, I saw a girl with big, bouncy curls standing at my front door. Her eyebrows were slightly raised, with an expression of pure innocence.

Seeing me, she gave a tight-lipped smile: "Aria, long time no see."

I looked at her expressionlessly: "What do you want?""Nothing major, I just hope you'll stop pestering Everett from now on," she said with a playful wink, taking a step forward.

"After all, you two are already divorced, and he has a girlfriend. Aria surely wouldn't want to be the other woman, would she?"

I chuckled softly, not bothering to argue with her. "What's the matter? Not so confident in your love after all?"

Vivienne's smile instantly faded, her tone turning vicious. "I'm here to warn you not to get any ideas. You're the person he despises the most."

"Oh, is that so?" I replied flatly, pushing her aside and closing the door behind me without looking back.

The next day, I saw Everett.
