Chapter 14: The Mission

At this moment, Viggo had already cornered Marcus at home, and all his weapons had been stripped.

A few subordinates were holding Marcus down while Viggo gave him a brutal beating. Now, Marcus's face was covered in blood, barely clinging to life.

Viggo sat on the staircase nearby, pulled out his phone, and called John Wick.

"Hello, Jonathan."

"I thank you for granting my son death. I don't even know how to describe it."

John Wick was driving while listening to Viggo's words.

"Marcus betrayed me. He broke the rules for you."

"I'll deal with him according to the Russian mob's rules."

After finishing, Viggo hung up the phone, stood up with a towel in hand, twisting it like a rope.

Marcus, lying on the ground and barely conscious, said:

"You canceled the bounty."

Viggo, enraged, responded:

"As long as the bounty exists, you still have a chance…"

"A chance to kill John Wick."

"If you had done your job, my son might still be alive."

Viggo punched Marcus again and, after another round of torture, strangled him to death with the towel.

---

After the call ended, John Wick sharply turned his steering wheel, making a U-turn and heading toward Marcus's house.

On the way, he thought about what Fox and Winston had told him at the Continental Hotel. Clearly, his cleanup work had been sloppy.

He also realized that if Viggo could find out Marcus saved him, he might also know about Smith helping him—and might go after Smith too. Immediately, he pulled out his phone and called Smith.

"Smith, it's John."

"John, what's wrong?"

John Wick's expression turned somber. An old friend who had saved him many times had just been killed by Viggo because of him.

"I should've never let Viggo go."

"Marcus helped me, and Viggo brought people and killed him."

"Smith, you saved me too. You ruined Viggo's plans."

"I'm worried he'll come after you. Be careful."

Smith glanced at Fox in the passenger seat, sighed, and said:

"Viggo already sent people, but Fox and I took care of them."

Hearing this, John apologized:

"Sorry, Smith."

"I'll make things right. He won't bother you again."

After the call ended, Smith shook his head.

Even though John Wick was planning to take action against Viggo to avenge his friend, Smith had no intention of letting Viggo go either.

But first, he needed to return to the Assassin Alliance. As for Viggo's life? It was a race to see who would get to him first.

---

Soon, Smith returned to the Assassin Alliance with Fox. After sending Fox to the recovery room, he headed to the conference room.

There, Gunsmith, Butcher, Cross, Mr. X, and others had been waiting for him.

Cross looked at Smith and said:

"GOD, your mission selection list is ready. Choose one."

"These organizations are all deemed threats by the alliance, but each has a different level of difficulty—even our old enemies are on the list."

As he spoke, Cross placed a folder in front of Smith.

Smith opened it. The first page surprised him—it was none other than the Russian mob in New York. The page detailed their leadership, headquarters, outposts, and their major crimes.

He skimmed it and flipped to the second page.

If the Russian mob was an appetizer, then the next name—Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen—was the main course.

After a quick look, he turned to the third page: The High Table. The fourth: The Hand.

The Hand, especially, had long been a rival of the Assassin Alliance. Thanks to former leader Sloan, their war had been on hold for years.

But Smith wasn't afraid of any of these organizations—even with his current strength, he could take them all on.

Seeing that Smith had finished reading, Cross continued:

"There are four targets here, but you only need to pick one from the first two."

"As for the last two, they'll be your focus after becoming the Alliance's new leader."

Smith understood. It was framed as four missions, but really just two options now: The simpler Russian mob, or the tougher Kingpin.

Smith closed the folder and said:

"I'll take all four."

Mr. X was stunned, then said:

"Smith, you only need to complete one."

Smith nodded but replied:

"I'll start with the Russian mob. As for the other three—if they're all targets we need to eliminate, then I'll clear them out one by one."

Cross said:

"Then begin with the Russian mob. But this one you have to handle solo. Once you move on to the others, the full support of the Alliance will be at your command."

---

Meanwhile—

John Wick had arrived at Marcus's house. After getting out of the car, he armed himself and quietly entered the building, unsure if Viggo had left anyone behind.

Inside, he found only Marcus's corpse lying in a pool of blood. Viggo and his men were already gone.

Seeing the brutal state of Marcus's body—his face mangled, legs stabbed through with knives, and finally strangled—John Wick's face darkened.

Looking at Marcus's wide-open eyes, John gently closed them and murmured:

"Marcus, I will avenge you."

Then, he called Winston.

"Winston, I want Viggo's location."

Winston replied:

"John, the Continental has its rules. So I won't tell you… that someone is currently hiding in his headquarters…"

"And has summoned all his men."

John understood the hint, hung up, and looked at Marcus one last time.

He left the house, knowing it was time to prepare. Charging straight into Viggo's stronghold unarmed would be suicide, not revenge.
