Unnerved Her

Watching the flashy, bright lights in the club, accompanied by hard beats, brought up discomfort in Emma. Although this was a usual scene for her in her previous life, the trauma she incurred here made her feel nausea.

Color drained out of her face. But holding on to Samuel's hand, she tried to act normal. Samuel led to the second floor and took her to one of the rooms for the VIP.

Inside the room was Samuel's friend gathered. Instead of the messy people Emma hung around with, Samuel's friend circle was cleaner and more mature.

They were all well-reputed figures that everyone looked up to with each having their achievements.

Emma didn't have much interactions with his friends in her previous life. Other than the few times Samuel introduced them to her, they didn't share any interactions as there was no topic for her to share with them.

As Emma sat down beside Samuel, one of his friends spoke out, "Emma is here. Would you like something to drink?"

"No alcohol for her," Samuel stated, "Get her some mocktail or soda."

Emma's eyes stayed on the bottles of expensive champagnes and wines, holding a sense of loss. She pouted towards Samuel.

"Come on, Samuel," she pleaded, "a little bit. I am not going to get drunk."

Samuel shook his head. "No can do. I promised your dad to take care of you."

Emma rolled her eyes, scoffing. "Boring."

After that, she leaned against the couch and took out her phone, playing with it. Although she seemed to be concentrating on her phone, her ears were on the conversation carried out by those around her.

Unlike her friend circle who bragged about where they went on vacation, what bag they purchased, or which model they slept with, their conversation steered towards current economic state. They talked about the future plans of business and thoughts of cooperation.

There were no escort women accompanying them or any signs of drugs in the room.

Emma heard their conversation, trying to understand it. If she wanted to stably take over her father's business, she had to build credibility in their eyes.

Picking up the slice of apple from the table with a fork, she took a bite out of it.

However, she couldn't show her ambition here in front of Samuel. It would make him doubt her.

She needed to take slow steps.

"Samuel, I heard from Uncle Lin you're looking over the new resort development," brought up one of his friends.

"Taking up the responsibility of such a huge project on your own— this is your first time, right?"

Samuel nodded.

"I am surprised he trusted me with it. All I hope is I can live up to his expectations. I will be looking forward to all of your support."

"You can count on us. He is training you to be his heir, right?"

After those words left his friend's mouth, their eyes silently shifted towards Emma. Emma acted nonchantly, playing games on her phone.

However, underneath the calmness shown, she tightly gripped on to her phone, displaying her aggressiveness during the game.

Her father indeed saw the potential and reliability in Samuel and planned to hand over the business to him. In return, all he wanted was for Samuel to look over Emma.

Thinking about it made Emma more confused. He could have had the entire company, and with his ability, it would have reached new heights.

All the success would have been his.

Why did he betray her dad?

"You can't say that," Samuel said. "It is too early. And Emma is there as well."

Before Emma could respond, the door to the private room opened.

As the man entered the room, his presence was imposing and powerful. His hair was disheveled. He wore a pair of cargo pants, matched with a black tank top, revealing his muscular arms. A scar ran down his arm, mixed with various bullet marks.

Emma's eyes paused on him. Her hands shook due to the fear. Cold sweat gathered on forehead as chill traveled down her back. Her instincts made her want to run away from the room.

The man's gaze shifted and fixed on Emma.

"Samuel, your younger sister is here as well."

His deep, amused voice made her shudder.

Those dark eyes of his brought all the traumatizing memories of her previous life to the surface. She recalled how he tortured her for her sadistic pleasure.

Although they seemed gentle now, looking at her like a little sister, she knew well enough how frightening they could get.

He smiled. "Did little Emma forget who I am? I must admit. It has been a while. I am Jonathan, Jonathan Chen, a very good friend of Samuel's."

How could she ever forget who he was?

Before she could conjure up a reply, there was a knock on the door. A waiter stepped in, holding a tray of different mocktails.

"Place it on the table."

The waiter entered the room with his head down, placing the tray of mocktails on the table.

Jonathan came over and was about to touch Emma's head when Emma shrunk back. Her complexion was pale as she avoided his touched.

In her frenzied state, she tried to get up from there when her hand collided against a glass of mocktail. The glass fell down, crashing against the tile, and the drink spilled all over, attracting everyone's attention.

Emma's eyes shook.

That's when, she felt a hand hold her wrist. Emma turned her head to find Daniel standing beside her. She was surprised to find out he happened to be the waiter serving them the drink.

"Daniel," she uttered. Seeing his face here brought her some sense of relief.

This was the first time Daniel saw her so shaken up and panicked. Her face was drained out of color, resembling a poor little creature facing a ferocious beast.

He was used to her being arrogant that the fragility she showed caught him aback.

What can unnerve her?
