Chapter 28 – A Man Left Behind

The world hadn't stopped for James Green. It had simply grown quieter.

Susanna was in jail.

The woman he once gave everything to—his home, his heart, his loyalty—was now locked away, and the silence she left behind was louder than her presence had ever been. He didn't miss her. Not truly. What he missed was the illusion, the thrill, the fantasy. Now, all he felt was the bitter aftertaste of betrayal.

The press had a field day, and with Susanna's name tied to his, his company stocks had taken a dive. Investors pulled out. Clients questioned his ethics. For the first time in years, James wasn't the unshakable titan of Silvercity.

But he didn't collapse.

He adapted.

Slowly but surely, he rebuilt his image, restructured the company, took accountability in public. His legal team worked tirelessly to separate his assets from the scandal, and with the help of advisors—and a few silent nudges from his parents—James began to steady the ship.

He spent more time alone. No lovers. No distractions. Just long days at the office and longer nights with his regrets.

He visited the cemetery more often now. Mary's name etched in marble was the only place where his pride dared to soften. There, he'd whisper apologies. Speak of George. And sit in silence.

But she never answered.

He hadn't seen George in weeks. The boy was growing, and the distance between them felt like oceans.

James knew now what real loss was. He wasn't sure if he could ever be forgiven, but he would spend the rest of his life trying.

He had paid the price, but part of him wondered—was it enough?
