Onyx Wolves or simply Onyx, as they're generally called—are beastborn who can not shift. Once, they came in many forms.
Ancient lore, now mostly forgotten, speaks of the Onyx Wolves as sacred beings, descendants of the goddess Gullveig, wielders of magic passed down through generations.
But that magic died with their massacre. Scattered across kingdoms and Packs, their numbers thinned until they were little more than lores.
Now, the Onyx are ordinary closer to human than Gullveig's descendants, stripped of any magical abilities.
A new belief has replaced their old worship: that the blood of Gullveig in their veins brings misfortune. And that wherever an Onyx walks, ruin follows.
To the point it's become a little snarky chant for children:
Born of Gullveig's bitter flame,
Ash-born wolves without a name,
They shift no more but still they bite,
Bring famine, plague, and endless night.
