Despair… Light of Hope ( 2 )

We're going to go back in time a little, to where Liora took her final phase of the trial.

Liora still stood frozen, her staff trembling in her grip as the brutal scene replayed yet again—the man's swords slashing. The boys body cut in two, blood splattering everywhere like macabre confetti. Her mind raced, conflicting thoughts screaming louder than the chaos around her.

Should I kill him? Can I kill him? He's human… each repetition of the horror tightened the knot in her chest until Solara's hints finally clicked.

"a demon… maybe he's a demon in disguise," she whispered frantically, her voice barely audible. With newfound resolve, she locked her eyes on the man and chanted, "Golden Ray!" a pillar of light erupted, consuming him instantly.

This time, the boy vanished without exchanging glances, leaving Liora breathless and shaken. Solara's melodic laughter broke the tension. "congratulations, Liora."

The young mage sprinted toward the phoenix, her voice a mix of triumph and panic. "I figured it out, Solara! He wasn't real—he was a demon trick, right?"

Solara's smile faded slightly, her tone gentle but unyielding. "he was real, Liora. A simulation, yes—but still human. Sometimes, evil wears a human face".

Liora's eyes widened in horror. "but… but I killed him! I'm a murderer?" Solara shook her head, wings rustling softly.

"no. you acted to save the innocent. But remember: not all enemies are demons. Some are humans who've lost their way. Your journey will force you to face that truth—and choose between your principles and survival." Liora swallowed hard, tears welling up. "i-I'll study harder. I'll learn to judge better."

Solara's expression softened. "I know you will. But for now…" she bowed her head, offering the tip of her beak. "touch me. Claim the power you've earned."

As Liora's fingers brushed Solara's beak, a colossal pillar of energy erupted, tearing through the sky like a second sun. Time itself seemed to freeze—the battlefield outside, the temple walls, even the air hung motionless.

Liora gasped as mana surged through her veins, power flooding her senses a hundredfold. Knowledge flooded her mind, precise and overwhelming, like a library being downloaded into her thoughts.

When the light dimmed and receded back into one of the stars on the staff, she glanced at Solara, gratitude and awe shining in her eyes. But the phoenix was already aloft, her voice echoing urgently.

"celebrate later. Your friends need you—now." Liora's heart lurched. "the war! How long have I been here?" she sprinted toward the temple door, throwing it open to find Grand Priest Agapios slumped against a wall, muttering incoherent prayers.

"oh, thank the lord of light," he mumbled feebly before collapsing face-first into the floor. Liora winced, "sorry, Agapios—I'll send help!" rushing outside, she spotted a junior priest polishing a horse.

"priest! Go inside and help the Grand Priest! I don't have time to explain!" without waiting for a response, she leaped onto the horse and galloped toward the battlefield, leaving the baffled priest staring after her.

Back to the present. The orcs were not idle spectators. Shaken from their stupor, they charged en masse, howling with fury—all except the Orc King, who remained eerily calm.

Undeterred, Liora raised her staff once more, chanting, "Dawn's Embrace." Brilliant rays of light rained down from the heavens, piercing through gaps in the clouds and obliterating the green-skinned foot soldiers instantly.

Their bodies turned to ash, scattering in the wind, while the stronger orcs screeched in agony, succumbing to the relentless barrage. Yet the Orc King stood unyielding, letting out a deafening roar that shook the battlefield.

Fear rippled through the human ranks, but Liora remained steadfast. She cast "Golden Ray" directly at the Orc King, causing him to stagger momentarily, panting and steaming from the impact.

Realizing brute force alone wouldn't suffice, Liora gestured elegantly with her staff, calling forth Solara. "Come Forth, Solara", she intoned, her voice steady despite the chaos.

The air grew heavy as clouds spiraled together, parting to reveal the majestic phoenix descending gracefully. Her wings spread wide, Solara landed beside Liora with an authoritative presence, her sharp eyes locking onto the Orc King menacingly.

Without hesitation, Liora commanded, "Photon Strike". Light gathered between Solara's beak, swelling to immense proportions before launching toward the Orc King.

He had no chance to dodge or block; the blinding energy consumed him entirely, reducing him to nothingness within seconds.

When the attack subsided, only a crater remained where the Orc King once stood—a testament to the overwhelming power unleashed. For several minutes, silence reigned supreme.

Liora nodded at Solara, giving her approval for the dismissal of the summoned being. Solara jumps and claps her wings, flying, circling a little before sped off and disappear into the clouds.

Everyone was frozen in disbelief, struggling to process the miraculous turn of events. Then, breaking the stillness, Elowen rose shakily to her feet and screamed from the depths of her soul, "WE'VE WONNNN… WE'VE WON, EVERYONE!" her cry ignited a volcanic eruption of joy across the battlefield.

Soldiers cheered wildly, tears streaming down their faces as they embraced one another, jumping like children given candy. Some fell to their knees, shaking their heads in disbelief, unable to fathom how they had survived.

Elder Lucien clutched Gawain's shoulders, shaking her slightly. "is this real, Gawain? We've won? It's impossible!"

Gawain, slightly dizzy from the vigorous shaking, gently removed Lucien's hands and replied with a teary smile, "well, Lucien, impossible isn't a fact—it's just an opinion. And yes, we've won."

They collapsed into a tight hug, sobbing happily as the weight of their triumph sank in. across the field, humanity celebrated not merely survival but redemption—a victory snatched from the jaws of despair.
