Chapter Eleven: Difficult Choices

The faces of the six participants showed signs of struggle. The questions seemed simple, yet they were troublesome to solve. They weren't particularly good at studying, and there were only a few questions they could answer correctly now.

It was likely that they would fail, and so would their partners. From that perspective, giving up seemed like the best choice. Not only would it secure a spot in the next promotion exam, but it would also allow their partners to get a spot.

However, they had been preparing for so long just for this S-level assessment. It would be too disheartening to be scared off by a few questions.

Cana hesitated. She had answered some of the questions, but there were still some unanswered. Passing seemed difficult. The opportunity to advance to the S rank was precious, and she wasn't sure if she would get it next time.

Facing opponents like Erza and Mira made it challenging for her to win against them. Should she give up this exam?

"Tell me, what is your choice?"

Suddenly, "Crack!!"

Natsu, feeling seasick, slapped the table and stood up, shouting at Aiden: "We will not give up!!"

"We have been training hard for so long, and we won't be stopped by these questions! We'll fight for the spot to advance to the S-level! I don't want a spot obtained in this way! I will not give up!!"

The others were inspired by Natsu's words.

Gray nodded and said, "That's right! If I don't get the spot next time, it means I'm not ready. I will fight for the qualification to advance to the S rank!"

Erza said seriously, "If I fail, it means I'm not ready to become an S-class mage. But I won't give up fighting until the last moment."

"That's right! I won't give up either!" Elfman echoed.

Mira stood on a chair and stepped onto the table: "Well said, this is my brother! No matter how difficult this test is, I will definitely advance to an S-rank mage. Bring it on!"

Suddenly, "Wow!!!"

Master Makarov opened his eyes, exuding a terrifying aura that made the entire ship shake.

"Is that your answer?"

"That's right!!" They gritted their teeth and replied with determination.

"You guys..." Master Makarov's face seemed stern, and just when they thought he might be angry...

The terrifying aura disappeared instantly, and Makarov smiled brightly:

"All qualified!"

"What?!"

Everyone was dumbfounded. Moments ago, they were on the verge of elimination, and now they had all passed the test.

Makarov stood up and explained: "Although this first test is about basic knowledge, the most important thing is to test your self-control in the face of temptation, as well as your trust and bond with your partner."

"If you abandon your companions for your own interests, you cannot become a Fairy Tail S-level mage."

"Of course, choosing to give up the assessment for your companions is also valid, but it lacks some vigor. Continuing onward is crucial to becoming an S-rank mage."

"In short, this test is about intelligence and mutual trust with your partner."

"You have overcome it, so you are all qualified!"

"What! So that's how it is!" Cana was relieved to hear Makarov's explanation.

The same went for everyone else; they had been tormented by the questions and were mentally exhausted, unable to fathom the real purpose of the exam.

Gray, without realizing it, had taken off his clothes: "Great! Finally, no more questions! What kind of questions were those? Too difficult!"

"I don't want to do questions again in my life!" Elfman was equally tormented by the questions.

Although Erza felt the same, she asked Aiden curiously: "What are the answers to these questions?"

Aiden smiled and said, "These questions are simple! For example, the first question."

"Question 1: There are a total of 14 chickens and rabbits in the cage, with 38 legs. How many chickens and rabbits are there in the cage?"

"Assuming these chickens and rabbits are well-trained, we clap our hands and let each chicken and rabbit lift one foot, subtracting 14 feet, leaving 24 feet on the ground."

"Then we clap again, and the chickens and rabbits lift their second legs, subtracting another 14, leaving only 10 feet on the ground."

"Since chickens have only two legs, these belong to rabbits. Rabbits lifted two already, so there are five rabbits and nine chickens."

"Other questions are calculated similarly. You can't answer these simple questions? Tsk tsk!"

"This is okay?!"

They were stunned by Aiden's explanation. According to his calculations, the question was indeed simple.

Seeing their expressions, Aiden felt pleased. Exams, after all, aren't truly exams without the challenge of written tests.

"The first level of assessment is over, so let's prepare for the second level now."

"Now?!"

They were taken aback, fearing they'd have to do more questions—something they never wanted to do again.

Aiden pointed to a box resembling a lottery and said, "Each of you draws a ball. A friendly reminder: don't show what you draw to anyone except your group."

Erza stepped forward and drew a small ball with the word 'sky' written on it. She was a bit puzzled and didn't understand what it meant.

The others took their turns drawing.

"Okay, you've all drawn, and just in time, we've arrived at Monster Island. Let's all disembark."
