Chapter 117 – The Dragon Slayer Becomes the Evil Dragon, Invades Raccoon City!
Although he had been targeted by Aizen for a long time, since he kept hiding out in Squad Four, there hadn't been much trouble.
On one hand, Squad Four was the medical division; he was responsible for medical care within the Seireitei and didn't need to go out to heal the wounded. Plus, after he refused several of Aizen's subtle invitations, Aizen stopped seeking him out for a while.
But lately, he noticed that Aizen's gaze was becoming increasingly strange.
Though Aizen still maintained his gentle and refined demeanor, Renji was very clear that Aizen was getting ready to make a move against him.
An unknown individual, plus that overwhelming spiritual pressure from before—how could Aizen just sit and wait? Renji had never seen Kyōka Suigetsu.
Aizen liked to control everything from behind the scenes, but he also enjoyed creating an opponent, because he thought being alone was too boring. Every Shinigami in the Seireitei had seen his Kyōka Suigetsu, except for the Head Captain. Aizen didn't take any of them seriously.
So, he needed an opponent. At first, he wanted to cultivate Renji as his rival, so he started testing him. But Renji was too cautious, making Aizen unsure how to proceed.
As a result, while probing Renji, he also created a second opponent: Kurosaki Ichigo.
Of course, the real focus was Kurosaki Ichigo; Renji was just a distraction to stave off boredom.
After all, Kurosaki Ichigo possessed three different powers.
That's why Renji knew—if Aizen found out he lacked real strength and had wasted so much of his time, he would definitely get rid of him.
Although he was strong now, who could say if he had reached Aizen's standard?
It was really tough!
[Naruto Renji]: "Just keep hiding, stick to being overly cautious, especially with Ichigo around—he's basically a walking cheat!"
Actually, just lying low in the Bleach world isn't a guaranteed way to survive; there were several major incidents where lives could be lost.
Especially now that Renji had drawn Aizen's attention.
[Bleach Renji]: "No, everyone's working hard to get stronger. How could I just focus on hiding? If Ichigo can do it, why can't I?"
[Naruto Renji]: "Because Ichigo is the biggest cheat in the Bleach world!"
[One Piece Renji]: "And then there's the Soul King Palace crowd and the noble families. The darkness in the Bleach world runs deep."
[Mundane Renji]: "Sounds like your world isn't much different, is it?"
[Naruto Renji]: "Actually, none of us are that different. Anyway, since you've made up your mind, you just need to raise your spiritual pressure. In Bleach, it's all about spiritual pressure!"
[Bleach Renji]: "First, I need to be on guard against Aizen's Kyōka Suigetsu. My strength has grown a lot lately, all thanks to you guys, but my Zanpakutō still hasn't reached Bankai. I don't even know its name. Sometimes I wonder if I ended up with a fake Zanpakutō."
Ever since he'd gained perfect Hollowfication, plus all kinds of abilities from the chat group, his progress had been huge.
All he lacked now was time.
[Resident Evil Renji]: "Alright, I'm almost at Raccoon City. Anyone have questions?"
[Naruto Renji]: "Where's that trench coat lady?"
[One Piece Renji]: "What about her boyfriend?"
[Mundane Renji]: "Where's Jill?"
[Hong Kong Cinema Renji]: "Looks like Uncle Wai sent me to the wrong place!"
Raccoon City...
That place ended up destroying an entire world.
This poor guy—soon the whole world would be full of zombies, not just Raccoon City. The viruses from CSOL would leak too, creating countless mutated zombies.
[Resident Evil Renji]: "Be serious! I'm driving there right now, and I still don't know the actual situation in Raccoon City!"
He wasn't going there to pick up girls, so all these questions were pointless. The first few he could ignore, but then someone even brought up Wesker—this group was not normal!
Plus, the situation in Raccoon City wasn't clear. There were definitely zombies since the leech virus from the mansion had leaked, but whether the G-virus had leaked was still unknown.
The zombie outbreak in Raccoon City was caused by the G-virus. If it had leaked, that meant William had turned into that monster.
He now had a lot of power, but his stamina couldn't keep up. Thankfully, with the Eight Gates' Rest Gate forcibly boosting his stamina, things were a bit better. Still, since this was an everyday world, his physical strength was lower than the other Renjis.
Maybe even the Mundane Renji was stronger, since that world had magic!
So, he was eager to get this sorted out and fix his stamina problem. The T-virus in the games, unlike in the movies where it turned Alice into a superhuman who could even knock out satellites with telekinesis, mostly just enhanced recovery, stamina, and strength. That was what mattered to him most right now.
[Naruto Renji]: "So, what's your plan? What are you actually going to do in that world?"
No one had ever really asked about his objective.
But now that the story had begun, he ought to have his own plan, right?
After hearing the question, Resident Evil Renji fell silent for a while. He was also a bit lost about his goal.
After realizing he was in the Resident Evil world, he had two options: join Umbrella or join an international organization to fight Umbrella.
If he chose to be a civilian, sorry—he'd probably be among the first to die.
So, after some struggle, Renji chose to join Interpol.
He submitted some documents, survived several assassination attempts thanks to his solid foundations, but those attempts made him even more cautious, and he secretly vowed to take down Umbrella as soon as possible.
But after joining the chat group, he realized his world wasn't just Resident Evil, and he became even more confused.
[Resident Evil Renji]: "I want to leave Interpol after this incident and form a new organization."
He took a deep breath, feeling a bit melancholy. Right now, he really did feel like the dragon slayer who becomes the evil dragon.
He had originally joined Interpol to save the world from being destroyed by Resident Evil, but now, he was planning to leave Interpol to study the T-virus, G-virus, and everything else.
He was starting to feel not so different from Umbrella. The thought made his eyes fill with uncertainty. What was he really doing?
Was it ambition, or something else?
He didn't know, but he could tell—his original intentions seemed to have changed.
[King of Fighters Renji]: "As expected, everyone's mindset changed after joining the chat group!"
He had actually noticed right from when everyone first joined that the organizations they were part of reflected what was on their minds at the time.
[Naruto Renji]: "That's right, there's nothing wrong with change. I even wanted to run away at first, but in the end, I stayed and sorted out the mess with the Uchiha clan, didn't I?"
It was normal to have a different mentality before and after getting a cheat.
[One Piece Renji]: "Didn't Chris also keep changing? Forming your own organization to study those things is fine too—I actually think it's pretty good. By the way, what did you change, @King of Fighters Renji?"
This guy usually kept quiet and was always "grinding." If you didn't know better, you'd think he was just an athlete in the King of Fighters world whose dream of fighting was ruined by a rainstorm.
[King of Fighters Renji]: "Ahem, when I first transmigrated, I just wanted to hook up with Mai Shiranui. The tournaments had nothing to do with me—after all, there were the Three Sacred Treasures families, they could deal with things themselves. But now I want to organize a tournament, like a new KOF. I want to defeat everyone, or maybe be defeated by everyone—just kidding! Really, I just want to plan a tournament like KOF."
When he first transmigrated, he went straight up the mountain to become a disciple at the Shiranui Dojo. When he saw Mai Shiranui, he knew he'd come to the right place.
He wasn't that ambitious, and he knew Mai Shiranui preferred getting married and having kids over actually competing in tournaments. That sounded perfect to him.
He'd always thought, "no matter what, don't let the kids suffer," so naturally he thought about getting together with Mai Shiranui. But once he got his cheat, everything changed.
[Resident Evil Renji]: "Thanks for the advice, everyone. I feel a lot clearer now. Really appreciate it."
After being talked through things by everyone, he realized he had been wallowing in self-pity.
A dragon slayer remains a dragon slayer—he still wanted to destroy Umbrella. As for whether he would become the evil dragon himself, he decided not to think about it anymore.
Driving all the way to Raccoon City, Renji was shocked by what he saw—the entire city had already been zombified. His heart sank; the plot had already started, and William Birkin seemed to have turned into a monster. So, the only way to get a G-virus sample was from the necklace around Sherry's neck.
Or, he could intercept HUNK in the sewers—HUNK had also taken a G-virus sample.
Honestly, Renji thought William was a genius. He'd considered trying to recruit him—even if William was uncontrollable, he'd make a great early-stage researcher.
He had the Red Queen AI, but right now, the Red Queen had no knowledge at all. Everything had to be absorbed by Renji himself, and data was the most important thing.
"Laboratory… where the hell is it?"
Renji kicked away a zombie blocking his path, preparing to find a high vantage point to survey Raccoon City.
"Red Queen, can you hack into Raccoon City's network and get me all the city's maps?"
He tapped his watch, and a virtual little girl appeared in the air. She glanced around, then nodded and said, "I need to access a computer to hack in."
The Red Queen could hack in, but not out of thin air; she needed a computer to gather information about Raccoon City.
"Wait a second."
Renji felt a little regret—he should have connected to Raccoon City's data before coming here. He hadn't expected to end up in the chat group at all. He'd only come to try to stop the outbreak, not to deal with viruses.
He knew very well that the people behind Interpol probably wanted to get their hands on this stuff, too. In a world-ending scenario like this, if he got the G-virus or its data, it would be a hot potato.
Ada Wong's organization would come after him, Umbrella would come after him, and no other organization would let him go, either.
So, his original plan was just to see if he could stop things. If not, he'd just leave—he wasn't going to throw his life away here. Renji knew his power level at the time was no match for a "vehicle killer" like Li Sanguang.
Closing his eyes and sensing his surroundings, Renji quickly located a residential building nearby with a computer inside.
With a kick, he knocked open the door. The zombie outbreak hadn't been going for long, so the network was still up.
The Red Queen quickly hacked in, copying the entire city layout into her system, along with other data.
"Lord Renji, all the data has been copied. As for the lab location, we need to crack Umbrella's security barrier. About thirty seconds to finish."
"Alright."
Thirty seconds.
It looked like this AI still had a lot to learn.
"Scanning complete. Lab location pinpointed. Lord Renji, there are enemies nearby—should I—bang!!!"
Before the Red Queen could finish, a huge object smashed through the wall by the computer. The monitor flew straight at Renji; he tilted his head to the left, and the screen smashed into the wall behind him.
"Damn! Who the hell has no sense of decency, destroying other people's property? What about the sanctity of private property?"
Such a violent entrance, and that guy in a hat—Renji took a look, then glanced at the woman on the ground. He cursed his luck. He'd run into Jill.
Come to think of it, this woman was being chased by the Tyrant. The events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 were happening at the same time in Raccoon City. On the day Claire and Leon arrived, poor Jill was already being hunted by the Tyrant.
"Stop staring! Come with me, now!"
Jill saw Renji still in a daze, didn't care what he was thinking, grabbed him, and dragged him outside.
She knew very well that she'd led the Tyrant here. If the guy in front of her got killed, she'd feel terrible.
"But… that Tyrant is chasing you! Why are you dragging me with you?!"
This poor soul didn't realize the Tyrant was only after her.
If he split from Jill, the Tyrant probably wouldn't even notice him!
