3. Expectations

Leo slowly turned his gaze towards the figure. His body filling with warmth somewhat alleviating his pain, feeling a long lost sense of security in this strange world

His emotions gradually calming as he spoke

" I'm just grateful to be alive. Thank you for saving me " said Leo as he tried to force a smile towards the figure, which made his face look strange as he grimaced in pain

" you're going to die " said the figure calmly after hearing Leo's words. Before they sat down a few feet away and started eating one of the fish

" what's your name " asked Leo as he tried to buy time for his injuries to heal, while grateful for the person who saved his life. What happened earlier today, didn't allow him to trust anyone that easily

The figure chewed for a bit before raising their head and glanced at Leo before speaking softly before continuing to eat

" ...Rebecca "

' a girl? ' thought Leo as he raised his hand for a handshake. Intending to introduce himself

Only for the girl to look at him strangely before ignoring him, easing further away as if she didn't want to be to close to the strange boy

' okay then ' thought Leo as he closed his eyes. Enjoying the rare comfort coming from his injuries healing, not paying much mind to her actions

" what was that " asked Rebecca as she looked at Leo who had his eyes closed, licking the oil from her fingers

" what was what? " asked Leo in confusion as he looked at her. Only to see her hand outstretched awkwardly, seeming to imitate him causing him to raise an eyebrow

" a handshake " said Leo " it's a polite gesture , like this " explained Leo as he raised his hand

" hello, my name is Leo, nice to meet you " said Leo as he stretched her arm towards Rebecca, who hesitantly got up and walked towards him before stretching out hers and touched his hand slightly before retracting her own

Before returning to eating her fish, not noticing the strange expression on Leo's face

' what the actual fuck ' thought Leo as he looked at the panel infront of him speechlessly. Glancing at the girl not far away in slight horror

' she has almost twice the strength of an adult man? ' thought Leo as he tried to process this information before he felt further disgust with his current status and felt the strangeness of this world

* ALL INJURIES HEALED *

Just then a panel appeared in front of Leo distracting him. Before he could read it, he let out a comfortable groan as he unconsciously sat up, startling Rebecca causing her to step back, looking at Leo alertly

Leo paid her no mind, as he felt the changes in his body, feeling glad at surviving.

' things seem to be going in the right direction ' thought Leo as he looked around, finally remembering his surroundings and his situation

' well at least I'm not dead '

Turning his attention who was now standing even further way looking at him warily, causing his mouth to twitch

Before he could speak, his stomach suddenly started growling

" do you have something to eat? " asked Leo feeling ashamed of having to asking a child for food " I'll pay you back when I regain my strength "

Rebecca looked at Leo hesitantly, glancing at him then at the fish in her arms, her expression becoming more and more distressed before she held out her hand which held a half eaten fish. With a resigned expression on her face

Seeing this, Leo was speechless, which was then followed by slight heartache at the girls actions

Slowly, climbing to his feet. Stumbling as he tried to take a few steps. His actions surprised the girl who knew the extent of his injuries, she wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly died.

" do you have a fishing rod? " asked Leo, taking in the girls expression but didn't intend to explain. His system was his way to survive in this world, and he wouldn't tell anyone

Hearing his question. The girl subconsciously shook her head before speaking

" I saw fishermen use this leaf as bait to attract fish " explained Rebecca as she slowly took a set of leaves from her clothes and showed Leo

" the fish get poisoned, then you can just pick them out of the water. I only found a few pieces, so these fish were all I could catch "

Looking at the leaves the girl took out, Leo felt his heart racing

' it can't be ' thought Leo as he tried to reach out and inspect the leaf, only for Rebecca to put them back in her clothes

" can you show me where you found these leaves? " asked Leo expectantly, not minding her actions. Internally telling himself not to be so excited

Rebecca looked at him quietly for a few seconds before nodding her head and stuffing the remainder of the fish into her mouth before turning to leave

Motioning for Leo to follow her

The 2 walked for about 20 minutes before coming to a clear patch of land with several footsteps in the soil. Rebecca waited for Leo to stop gasping for air, sweat soaking his clothes

' this shit is embarrassing ' thought Leo as he looked at the girl in front of him, who looked no different from when they set off. Her hood still covering her head

" all of the leaves were taken by the fishermen " explained Rebecca after she saw Leo catch his breath. As she pointed towards the area before walking to a certain spot of land " I found my leaves right here "

Looking at where the girl was pointing, Leo told her to step back before he kneeled down and started digging much to the girls confusion which increased as the boy started laughing while holding several brown balls in his hand

" what are those " asked Rebecca seeing his excitement

" potatoes, glorious potatoes " said Leo as he looked at the wild potatoes the size of a fist in his hand
