The Divine Maiden Xi Yao

Xi Yao had been led by Qi Yan for what felt like an eternity, yet the desolation ahead never ceased.

The ground was parched, cracked as if ready to collapse at any moment, with withered trees standing crookedly like sentinels long dead.

"Why did you bring me here?" Xi Yao finally spoke up, her tone laced with wariness.

"Didn't you ask where the demons are?" Qi Yan stopped and turned to look at her. "I'm showing you their… accommodations."

Xi Yao frowned. "You say it so casually, as if they're just vacationing in a mountain villa."

Qi Yan smirked. "It is quite cool here. They're all like ice sculptures now."

With a wave of his hand, a dark mist rose before them.

As the mist dissipated, rows of towering stone pillars were revealed, each bearing a swirling black orb—like sealed souls floating silently in midair.

Xi Yao sucked in a sharp breath.

"These… are the demons?"

"Mn. Each orb is a demon's spirit, trapped in this Ten Thousand Souls Array, unable to move."

Qi Yan stepped forward, gazing up at the drifting orbs, his voice unreadable. "They were sealed because of me back then."

Xi Yao remained rooted in place, silent for a long while.

"How am I supposed to free them?"

Qi Yan looked at her, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Didn't you say you wanted to run? If you undo their seals, the Demon Realm won't be just me anymore. Escaping would be easier."

"How considerate of you." Xi Yao scoffed. "Then why don't you undo it?"

"I told you," Qi Yan spread his hands, "my seal loosened because of you. Theirs… only you can break."

"I'm not the Divine Maiden anymore."

Qi Yan arched a brow, his expression saying "Do you think I don't know?" "But your divine heart is still there. Even a trace of it makes you the key."

Xi Yao pursed her lips skeptically and approached one of the pillars. She reached out, lightly tapping the black orb.

Nothing happened.

She poked it harder.

Still nothing.

"Are you lying to me?" She turned to glare at him.

Qi Yan held up his hands innocently. "Why would I lie? You have no divine power now, of course it won't open. Maybe try another method? Like… persuading it?"

"Persuading?" Xi Yao sneered. "You want me to reason with a rock?"

Qi Yan shrugged. "You've been reasoning with me for days. Might as well switch targets."

Xi Yao: "..."

Ignoring him, she closed her eyes, trying to summon divine energy—but her mind was a void, like trying to ignite damp firewood without even a spark.

Suddenly, the orb twitched.

Qi Yan's eyes flashed. "Oh? You moved it."

Xi Yao opened her mouth to say "I didn't do anything," but the ground beneath her trembled faintly.

The next instant, the world spun violently, as if sucked into a whirlpool!

"Qi Yan!" She instinctively reached for him.

Even Qi Yan hadn't expected this. He grabbed her wrist, and the two tumbled into a vortex of shifting light and shadow.

---

When they landed, they found themselves standing by a lakeside.

The sky was soft and bright, surrounded by peach blossoms in full bloom. A gentle breeze carried birdsong, as if they'd stepped into a springtime illusion.

Qi Yan: "...I think I might be dead."

Xi Yao stared in shock, her lips parting and closing. "This is—"

"Your heartscape." A voice drifted from behind them.

They whirled around. Beneath a peach tree, a blurred figure stood silently, its voice neither male nor female, ethereal and distant:

"You've finally come."

Qi Yan raised a brow. "Who's this? An old flame?"

Xi Yao smacked his arm. "Shut up!"

Qi Yan leaned in, whispering in her ear, "Heartscape… so we're inside your mind right now?"

"Have you no shame?" She rolled her eyes.

Qi Yan chuckled but kept his gaze fixed on the figure.

And the voice spoke again:

"Divine Maiden Xi Yao."
