"I miss you," Nicole admitted, voice soft. "I know you don't want to hear that, but I do."

Erica's chest tightened. "Then why did you let me go?"

Nicole hesitated, eyes full of regret. "Because I was stupid. Because I thought I was doing the right thing. But I never stopped—"

"Don't," Erica interrupted, her voice shaking. "Don't say it."

Nicole looked at her, pained. "Why not?"

"Because if you love me," Erica said, blinking back tears, "then why wasn't that enough?"

Nicole had no answer.

And that silence told Erica everything she needed to know.
