Chapter 90; What's wrong

Lu Ting Cheng raised his paddle. "Two million."

Gasps rippled through the room. It seemed like the two brothers had money.

The emcee blinked but smiled; this Lu family was spending money tonight, and they rarely graced them with their presence; they always sent their donations. "Two million, thank you, Young Master Lu."

Someone else attempted a weak counter. "Two-point one!"

Lu Ting Cheng, calm as ever, raised his paddle again. "Ten million."

The room fell silent.

"Sold!"

Applause thundered. Once the building was built, it would be called the name of the donor on it.

As the lights brightened again and the emcee closed the auction, a few people turned toward Lu Zhi Hao and Lu Wan Ruyi, not just with admiration—but with respect and envy.

They had money, yes.

But they also had a purpose. Since they had capabilities, why not donate a few million? That won't make them bankrupt.

Just as the final applause faded and the crowd began to mingle again after the auction, the atmosphere shifted.

It started subtly—murmurs from one side of the ballroom, curious glances exchanged between guests, then a few people pulling out their phones and whispering behind their hands.

Lu Zhi Hao caught the change instantly. His eyes sharpened, posture straightening as he subtly shielded Lu Wan Ruyi with his body.

A low voice behind him said, "Mr. Lu, you might want to see this."

One of his security aides, disguised as a server, approached and discreetly showed him a phone screen.

A photo had surfaced on a gossip blog and was now spreading on social media. It showed a woman who looked strikingly similar to Lu Wan Ruyi, from a few years ago, exiting a police station in handcuffs and wearing the yellow prison uniform.

The headline read:

"The Lu Family's hidden Secret is out: Who is Mrs Lu? Could she be a law offender?"

The blood in his veins went cold, his jaw tightened as he squinted his eyes on that image. This was obviously someone was targeting his wife.

Lu Wan Ruyi, still oblivious, smiled faintly as she spoke to a kind-faced donor. But when she turned back to Lu Zhi Hao, she paused, sensing the tension, and immediately caught that change of atmosphere.

"What's wrong?"

"Something happened?"

"Stay close to me," he said in a low voice, dragging her closer to him and intertwining their hands.

Then—

"Excuse me, Mr. Lu."

A sharp, feminine voice cut through the air. A woman in a sleek black dress approached her heels echoing sharply on the marble floor. Her smile was all teeth.

"I'm surprised to see you here, especially with her, I didn't know this was the kind of wife you had married!" she said, glancing at Lu Wan Ruyi with thinly veiled contempt. "After all… she does have quite a good record."

Lu Zhi Hao's expression darkened instantly, his eyes grew colder and drained of all the warmth the sunshine could ever offer. "You better mind your words. My wife ain't someone you can just talk about with the tone you want... I'm capable of anything."

"Why?" the woman shrugged with a mocking innocence. "It's in the public now. Everyone's curious. A former criminal suddenly Mrs. Lu? Quite the Cinderella story, don't you think? Is she worth it?"

The surrounding guests had gone silent. Eyes shifted to Lu Wan Ruyi, who stood motionless, her face pale but still composed.

Before Lu Zhi Hao could speak, Lu Wan Ruyi stepped forward calmly.

"If you are going to gossip," she said, voice clear and firm, "at least get your facts straight. I've never been convicted of anything. But I have walked away from people like you my whole life." this wasn't the first time and won't be the last time, she was never the afraid person. About killing, of course, she has done it, but for a reason. Going to prison? Of course, she has been to that place, no lie.
