A road stretched across the desolate desert.
Yellow sand swirled up, blanketing the land like a gauze veil. Within the hazy view, a lone figure walked slowly forward.
Quy Thu Nguyet had traveled through many places.
She finally arrived at this desolate desert.
The vehicle she had been driving had broken down earlier, forcing her to walk. Fortunately, her situation was rather unique, and she hadn't encountered any danger along the way.
"The living are far fewer than I imagined."
Quy Thu Nguyet knew the former era could never return. In this disaster, humanity had slipped from the top of the food chain.
She had always been studying her own condition. The combination of the Lucky Cells and the zombie virus had caused her body to undergo an earth-shattering transformation.
In the very beginning.
Her mind would, at random moments, fall into an unconscious frenzy. Parts of her body would mutate, such as her fingers forming sharp claws in that unconscious state.
At the same time, she developed a craving for zombie flesh and blood, similar to a human's hunger for food.
In the beginning, Quy Thu Nguyet had no conscious control. Later, the bloodstains at the corner of her mouth told her that things had happened while she was unconscious.
Later, perhaps as the influence of the Lucky Cells and the zombie virus on her body gradually increased.
She could maintain a sliver of conscious awareness.
However, her body still acted on unknown subconscious drives.
She could only watch helplessly as she hunted zombies and devoured their flesh and blood.
At first, she was repulsed by this behavior, vomiting constantly. But her body did not reject the flesh; it even gave her a sense of pleasure.
She knew then that her own stomach was different from that of an ordinary person.
Quy Thu Nguyet gave herself a title.
"Zombie Hunter."
The inspiration for this title came from when she was fifteen or sixteen and loved to read aesthetic manga, her favorite being those related to vampires. The male protagonist in one was half-human, half-vampire, who hunted vampires for a living and was called the Vampire Hunter.
So, calling herself the "Zombie Hunter" seemed perfectly fitting.
Now, she could maintain her reason and no longer experienced those previous lapses into unconscious behavior.
She discovered her own abilities were also constantly increasing.
Superhuman regenerative ability.
Even when injured, her wounds would automatically close.
The sensation of hunger disappeared.
She no longer felt hunger like a human, but she still had an impulse for zombie flesh, especially the flesh of evolved zombies, which in her eyes was a source of energy.
High-speed movement. She had tried comparing herself to a speed-type zombie and found her speed surpassed it.
Explosive bursts of strength. A single punch could dent a steel plate.
All of this indicated that her body's functions, under the fusion of the Lucky Cells and the zombie virus, had undergone an earth-shattering change.
Just then.
Quy Thu Nguyet saw a battered, modified bus approaching from behind.
A vehicle meant there were survivors.
Encountering survivors in this desolate desert was truly a somewhat unbelievable thing.
Apocalypse marauders?
She called anyone who held ill will towards other survivors in the apocalypse "marauders."
Walking through the apocalypse, she had seen many incredible things.
But in the apocalypse, if you thought about it carefully, you could understand that harsh environments could often drive a person mad.
Some could no longer be called human, completely devoid of humanity, merely beasts cloaked in human skin. To survive, any living creature was food in their eyes.
She had also seen survivors who used the sewers as their home, their faces covered in filth, their hair disheveled, their bodies reeking of stench, drinking filthy sewer water and eating raw rat meat.
Their behavior and mental state had already changed.
Perhaps those people were hiding in the sewers with the intention of surviving temporarily, but after staying in a dark environment for a long time, their mentality gradually changed, and they went completely insane.
When they saw humans, they would only think of killing and eating their flesh.
Soon.
The modified bus slowly pulled up in front of Quy Thu Nguyet.
Quy Thu Nguyet observed it.
The driver was a man wearing a blue hat, between thirty-five and forty years old, with a somewhat weary look. In the back of the bus were two other survivors, a man and a woman, who looked a bit younger.
The young man looked to be seventeen or eighteen, and his clothes also looked very clean.
As for the other woman, she was probably about forty-five, with the bulky build of a middle-aged woman.
A very strange combination.
"Miss, all alone?"
The driver in the blue hat didn't open the bus door, but observed Quy Thu Nguyet through the window. For them, seeing a survivor walking on foot was also an unbelievable thing.
This was the apocalypse now. Although this road seemed to have no zombies, who could be sure it was safe? If a zombie jumped out from a dark corner, it could be very dangerous.
"Yes, I'm alone."
Quy Thu Nguyet replied.
With her current condition, she was truly not afraid of anyone.
The driver in the blue hat said, "Are you also heading to the base?"
A base?
Quy Thu Nguyet thought to herself. Right now, all she could see was a desolate desert, truly vast and endless. She didn't know when she would be able to get out of this desert. As for where the base the other person mentioned was, how would she know?
"Yes, I'm heading there," Quy Thu Nguyet pretended to know about the base.
The driver in the blue hat opened the bus door and beckoned, "Get on, we'll take you. It's still a ways from the base."
"The apocalypse has been going on for so long, aren't you afraid I'm a bad person?" Quy Thu Nguyet didn't rush to get on, but asked instead.
The driver in the blue hat couldn't help but laugh, "In the apocalypse, what's a bad person or not a bad person? We're all just a bunch of people trying to live. Besides, haven't you heard of Awakeners?"
"I have," Quy Thu Nguyet nodded.
The driver in the blue hat said, "So, like I said, without some ability, one wouldn't dare to just pick people up along the way."
Quy Thu Nguyet understood. The reason the other party dared to take her was that all three of them were Awakeners and were very confident in their own strength. That was understandable.
She got on the bus.
The modified bus continued on its way.
Through conversation, Quy Thu Nguyet learned their names. The driver in the blue hat was named Chu Loi.
The other clean-looking boy was named Truong Bac Dao.
The woman with the slightly bulky build was named Cao Thuy Hoa.
It was certain that all three of them were Awakeners, but she didn't know what their awakened abilities were.
The driver in the blue hat said, "You definitely don't know about the base."
"You could tell?" Quy Thu Nguyet thought he would believe her, but it was clear she had thought too much.
"Of course I can tell. We've all been mixing in the apocalypse for so long. If we were still as foolish as before, we wouldn't even know how we died."
Chu Loi laughed, chatting with Quy Thu Nguyet while driving.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hide it. I just wanted to see the base," Quy Thu Nguyet was very interested in the base. The apocalypse was crueler than she had imagined, but there were also survivors who were still living in it, and those who survived had very strong minds and wills.
"Where are you from?" Chu Loi asked.
Quy Thu Nguyet said, "A faraway place, from over by Hop Thanh City."
She didn't say she came from Hoang City.
"Hop Thanh City? That's very close to Hoang City. The Hoang City Duong Quang shelter is very famous. If you don't want to wander around outside, the Hoang City Duong Quang shelter is the best place."
Chu Loi and the others looked at Quy Thu Nguyet with confusion.
"I found out too late. You guys know about the Hoang City Duong Quang shelter?" Quy Thu Nguyet asked in turn.
Chu Loi said, "Of course we know. The "Illustrated Guide to Zombies" is no secret now. There's a shelter there, with a group of survivors living there. I know you're definitely going to ask, since we know, why didn't we go there? The reason is simple: the journey is too far, and besides, we want to operate freely."
