Chapter Twenty-Two: Flames of Unity

"Your fire is not a curse, Kael. It is a beacon. And together, our flames can light the way."

—Riven

The camp was alive with the sounds of preparation.

Kael stood at the edge of the camp, his gaze fixed on the horizon.

Riven approached quietly, his presence a comforting constant in the chaos.

"You've been quiet," Riven observed, standing beside him.

Kael sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. "I don't know how much longer I can keep this up."

Riven turned to face him, his expression serious. "You don't have to do it alone."

Kael met his gaze, searching for the sincerity he knew Riven always offered. "But I am alone. Even with all of you, I still feel... apart."

Riven reached out, placing a hand on Kael's arm. "You're not alone. You never have been."

The words hung in the air between them, a promise and a plea. Kael closed his eyes, leaning into the touch, allowing the warmth of Riven's Heartflame to seep into him. It was a steady, calming presence, a stark contrast to the raging inferno within him.

"I don't know how to be what they need," Kael admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You don't have to be perfect," Riven replied. "You just have to be you."

Kael opened his eyes, meeting Riven's gaze. "And what if 'me' isn't enough?"

Riven smiled softly. "Then we'll figure it out together."

The days that followed were filled with strategy sessions, training, and preparations for the next phase of the rebellion.

One evening, as they sat together by the fire, Kael spoke up. "I've been thinking about the future. About what comes after all this."

Riven looked at him, his expression thoughtful. "And what have you decided?"

Kael hesitated, then said, "I don't know. But I know I want you by my side, no matter what."

Riven reached out, taking Kael's hand in his. "Always."
