Iceland's wind cut deeper than Michelle had anticipated.
Standing on a desolate plain outside Reykjavik, she tightened her down jacket against the biting gusts. In the distance, glaciers shimmered with ethereal blue-white radiance—beautiful yet forbidding.
"Is this the 'Glacier's Tear' from the clues?" she asked her guide, Olaf—the Watchers' local contact in Iceland.
Olaf shook his head, pointing toward a massive ice field. "That's our destination—Vatnajökull, Iceland's largest glacier. Local legends call it 'the Ice Goddess' Tears.'"
Michelle nodded, studying the breathtaking ice expanse. Since arriving in Iceland three days prior, she'd pursued leads about the Lunar Blade. According to the Takao scrolls and her family's archives, the sword was hidden deep within the "Glacier's Tear," guarded by "Ice Keepers."
"Any findings about these Ice Keepers?" she asked as they trekked toward the glacier.
"Interesting leads," Olaf replied, his voice muffled by the wind. "Old tales speak of 'Ice-Folk' who commanded frost and protected glacial secrets. Moderns dismiss it as myth, but as Watchers, we know myths often hold truth."
"Does this lineage still exist?"
Olaf shrugged. "Uncertain. If they do, they're deeply hidden. But we've one clue—a village near Vatnajökull whose residents claim descent from ancient Icelanders, keeping traditional ways. The Ice-Folk would likely be there."
Their off-road vehicle carried them toward Frostheim village. The rugged terrain grew increasingly barren, only occasional moss patches breaking the white monotony.
"Few outsiders come here," Olaf explained. "The villagers live isolated, preserving ancient knowledge."
By dusk, they reached Frostheim—two dozen wooden cabins nestled against Vatnajökull's edge. Chimney smoke curled into the frigid air, the only signs of life in this frozen outpost.
Villagers observed the strangers with wary curiosity. Most bore classic Nordic features—fair hair and pale skin—but Michelle noticed something extraordinary in their eyes: glacial blue depths that seemed to hold ancient winters.
Olaf conversed with the village elder, Thor, in Icelandic. The white-bearded man studied Michelle intently, his sharp gaze lingering on the faint violet glow at her wrists—the mark of her Staff.
"You're a Wielder," Thor declared in accented English. "The Staff of Light chose you."
Michelle blinked in surprise. "You know of the Weapons?"
Thor smiled faintly. "Our lineage guards knowledge of ancient powers. The Weapons and Relics are paramount."
He invited them into his warmly lit cabin where his wife Helga served tea.
"You seek the Lunar Blade," Thor stated matter-of-factly.
"Yes," Michelle confirmed, explaining their mission—Alicia's disappearance, the relic hunt, and their hopes to locate her.
Thor and Helga exchanged meaningful glances. "The Lunar Blade rests deep within Vatnajökull, guarded by our bloodline. But it's no ordinary weapon to claim."
"I understand," Michelle said. "I'll undergo any trials required."
"More than trials," Thor clarified. "The Blade chooses its bearer. And per ancient prophecy, the Lunar and Solar Blades must be wielded by true soulmates to unleash full power."
"Soulmates?" Michelle echoed, confused. "But we planned for Yeh Yao to wield both—he bears the Sword, and needs to find his beloved Alicia."
Thor shook his head. "That violates their essence. The Solar Blade suits male energy; the Lunar, female. They symbolize balance—requiring two united souls."
"But Alicia's missing," Michelle pointed out. "We need the relics' power to find her."
Thor pondered this. "A compromise exists. If your friend Yeh Yao holds the Solar Blade, and you earn the Lunar Blade's trust, you could safeguard it until Alicia's return."
"Would that work?"
"In theory," Thor cautioned. "But first, you must prove yourself through trials testing wisdom, courage, and purity of heart."
"I'm ready," Michelle declared firmly.
At dawn, Thor led her onto the glacier. The frozen labyrinth glittered unnaturally, blue-veined walls forming crystalline corridors that seemed alive.
"Vatnajökull's heart," Thor announced at an ice cave etched with familiar runes. "Few outsiders tread here."
Lighting a peculiar blue torch, he gestured toward the entrance. "Beyond lie three trials. Pass all, and the Lunar Blade may accept you."
Michelle took the torch and stepped inside.
The first chamber held an intricate ice puzzle—a celestial map with misplaced stars. Drawing on her astronomical knowledge, she realigned the constellations until the ice glowed, revealing the next passage.
The second trial was worse—a corridor of ice sculptures that came alive as monstrous apparitions. Her Staff proved useless against the phantoms until she realized the test: facing fear without weapons.
"I fear you not," she declared, touching a snarling beast. "You're illusions. True courage is acting despite fear."
The monsters melted away, granting access to the final chamber—a domed ice rotunda with a mirror-like pool. The inscription read: "The heart's mirror reveals truth."
Gazing into the water, Michelle saw her life's tapestry—achievements and flaws alike. The trial demanded complete self-acceptance.
"I am my light and darkness," she whispered. "Imperfect but striving for truth."
The pool illuminated, and from its depths rose the Lunar Blade—a breathtaking sword of glacial blue, its sapphire-encrusted hilt radiating ancient power.
As Michelle grasped it, her Staff transformed, merging partially with the relic—its crystal now shimmering violet-blue, runes glowing brighter.
"Trials completed, temporary Wielder," resonated a voice like cracking ice. "You've proven worthy to safeguard me until my true mistress returns."
Emerging from the cave, Michelle found Thor awestruck. "Few pass all trials. The Blade accepts you as guardian."
Back in Frostheim, she contacted Yeh Yao. Both shared their discoveries—the need for "soulbonded" wielders to fully activate the Phoenix Blades, yet agreeing to attempt partial merging.
"According to Thor," Michelle explained, "the Lunar Blade grants truth-sight and limited foresight. These may help locate Alicia."
Before departing, Thor gifted her an ancient scroll on the Blade's capabilities. "Remember—this is wisdom's weapon. Its vision may prove crucial."
Aboard her transatlantic flight, Michelle studied the scroll while contemplating Thor's words. Finding Alicia wasn't just about rescuing a friend—it was key to unlocking the relics' full potential against looming threats.
The Lunar Blade's energy pulsed within her, a glacial river merging with her Staff's violet fire. Whatever challenges awaited, she now carried winter's clarity to face them.
Thus continued the Gaia Expedition—a quest for truth, power, and a lost companion across the threads of time.
