The mountain trembled once more, as if disturbed by a force far greater than anything the sect had ever encountered. Elian stood, his body still humming with the energy that now thrummed through his veins, a pulse that was both foreign and familiar. He could feel it growing stronger, changing him in ways he couldn't yet fully comprehend.
"What was that?" Lin whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and awe. She was still recovering from the force that had knocked her back, but her concern for Elian was palpable.
"I don't know," Elian muttered, his voice distant as his hand instinctively rested on the black crystal embedded into his forearm. The crystal was pulsing with a dark, unearthly light that seemed to beat like a second heart.
The Grand Elder's piercing gaze never wavered. "Boy, explain yourself. What have you done?"
Elian glanced at the elders, then back at Lin. His mind raced. His cultivation had been altered in ways that defied logic, and with the new power flowing through him, he could feel the presence of something—someone—hidden deep below the temple. It wasn't just the temple that was alive, but the very mountain itself, its foundations shaking as though awakening from a long slumber.
"I haven't done anything," Elian said, his voice steady but tinged with an underlying unease. "But something in this temple… it's connected to me. Something is awakening. Something powerful."
The Grand Elder's eyes narrowed, suspicion and curiosity warring within them. "You're telling me you don't know what you've unleashed?"
Elian didn't answer immediately, choosing instead to focus on the sensation of the crystal embedded in his arm. The energy was growing, unfurling like the tendrils of some ancient, slumbering beast. But he could also feel something… waiting. A presence lurking in the shadows, watching him.
"Maybe it's not something I've unleashed," Elian said, his voice quiet, but his words carried the weight of truth. "Maybe it's been waiting for me."
A moment of silence passed between them, the tension thick in the air. Then, Grand Elder Furen let out a low, guttural laugh.
"Well spoken, boy," he said, his tone no longer accusatory but intrigued. "Perhaps you're not as foolish as I thought."
Lin stepped forward, her brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"
The Grand Elder's gaze softened as he turned to her. "The boy's power is unlike any we've seen before. We will need to learn more about him… and fast. The energy in this temple is unlike anything we've encountered. If we don't control it, there's no telling what will happen."
Elian could feel the shift in the air as the Grand Elder's words hung heavily in the chamber. The mountain seemed to pulse with life, and the shadows deepened around them.
"Take him to the inner sanctum," the Grand Elder ordered. "We must study this… anomaly."
Before Elian could react, Lin grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the deeper recesses of the temple. They passed through winding corridors and stairways that seemed to descend endlessly, the air growing colder and heavier the farther they went.
At last, they reached a massive stone door adorned with runes that glowed faintly. Elian's heart raced as they entered the inner sanctum—a vast chamber carved into the heart of the mountain. The walls were lined with ancient symbols, some of which Elian recognized from the memories the crystal had shared with him.
"Sit," Lin ordered, her voice firm. "We need to see what's happening to you."
Elian obeyed, his body trembling with the residual energy still pulsing through him. As he sat cross-legged in the center of the room, he could feel the eyes of the elders upon him, studying him with a mixture of awe and fear.
"This is unprecedented," one of the elders muttered.
Elian closed his eyes and took a deep breath, centering himself. The energy flowing through him had been volatile, but now, in this quiet chamber, he focused, trying to gain control over it.
As he did, he felt the presence again—the one waiting for him in the shadows. It was as though the darkness itself was calling to him, beckoning him to embrace it.
And then, with a sudden surge of energy, Elian felt it—the final piece falling into place.
A voice, deep and ancient, reverberated through his mind.
"Welcome, child of the Abyss. You have awakened."
The crystal in his arm pulsed one final time, and Elian's eyes flew open, glowing with an otherworldly light.
He was no longer just Elian.
He was something else.
And whatever he had awakened was not something the world was ready for.
