Angel stepped out of the airport, the cool air brushing against her face like a ghost from her past. She stood still for a moment, breathing in the city she once ran from. Her eyes traced the familiar skyline with a mixture of dread and sorrow.
I can't believe that I have to come back here, she muttered under her breath, her voice laced with resentment.
"Angel," Celine said beside her, adjusting the strap of her bag, "I told you that we should just go somewhere else while you call someone who can help you find your sister. Why do you need to come back here yourself?"
Angel's eyes narrowed as she looked ahead, jaw tightening. "I need to witness everything myself. They should help me find her and I will take her with me."
"You really cherish your sister a lot," Celine said softly, watching her with quiet admiration.
Angel's lips twitched, her eyes misting over for a second. "Do I? I don't think I do. I left her all alone despite the fact she is my only family."
Just then, a voice rang out behind her.
"Angel?"
She stiffened instantly. Her eyes widened as she turned toward the sound. Her breath caught.
She gasped. "Lo…Logan."
The man standing there grinned wide, the swagger in his walk as dangerous as the gleam in his eyes. "Yes baby! Come with me."
Angel's spine stiffened. "I'm not going anywhere."
Logan's smile never wavered, but his eyes turned cold. "Should I say it twice? If I say it twice I will kill that girl!" He turned to smirk directly at Celine, who paled visibly and shrank behind Angel.
Angel swallowed thickly. Her lips trembled. "I will come with you."
"Cool!" He smirked, wrapping a possessive arm around her shoulder like a leash, leading her toward the waiting car.
The sleek car rolled to a stop before an imposing mansion surrounded by high walls and steel gates. Logan stepped out first, then helped Angel out with practiced charm. Celine exited quietly, glancing around warily.
"Welcome to my home!" Logan announced, sweeping his arms out dramatically as he led them inside.
"Logan, why did you bring me here?" Angel asked as they entered the opulent foyer, her tone a fragile mix of exhaustion and irritation.
"Ain't you happy that I came to pick you up? It would have been stressful looking for a space to stay, right?"
"I have a house," Angel responded, holding her ground.
Logan scoffed. "There are tenants in your house, baby. Do you wanna chase them out?"
"I can go to a hotel or an apartment."
Logan's eyes darkened. His jaw clenched. Without warning, he raised his voice. "How dare you leave me and run away, Angel!!"
Angel flinched violently and shrunk back, her eyes darting to the floor like a scolded child.
"I didn't run away. My contract was terminated by the courtesan house."
"Why would you allow your contract to be terminated? Don't you know that you have a job there? You need to work for me!"
"I was trying to help you out, but then I was ousted."
"By who?"
"You don't need to know!" she snapped quickly, voice shaky.
Logan tilted his head, his lips curling. "Quincy's courtesan had you evicted from the house?"
Angel looked away. "I tried to kill her."
Logan's laughter was sharp and cruel. "You mean that little girl? That tiny girl called Harper had you evicted?"
"My bad deeds were just exposed."
"Don't fucking piss me off, Angel!" he bellowed suddenly, lunging forward and grabbing her by the throat. She gasped, struggling in his grip as her feet scrambled against the floor.
"That girl made me lose millions in a matter of minutes. My warehouse was lit up and my field was raided! Half of my peddlers and guards were taken away because they were underage! You were supposed to take care of her for me, but she sent you out of the courtesan house before I even got back. She outsmarted you? A girl that served you for two years outsmarted you?"
"She is a courtesan," Angel choked out weakly.
"Courtesan my foot!!!" he roared, tightening his grip before shoving her against the wall. "What did I pay you for, Angel? What is your purpose here if you can't get rid of that tiny thing called Harper?"
"I tried, Logan! Please let me go!" she gasped, clutching at his wrist as tears welled in her eyes. "I tried my best."
"But she was smarter than you?"
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Logan!" A tear escaped and slid down her cheek as he finally let go, and she collapsed slightly, clutching her throat.
"It's fine," he said coldly. "You are no longer a courtesan, but you still belong to me, Angel. You can't run away like this."
"I won't," she whispered, defeated.
"Go to my room and clean up. You are staying here henceforth."
"Logan, I—"
"It's okay! I said you are staying here! Go up now!" he shouted, and she flinched again, turning on her heels and walking away, her fists clenched. Celine followed her quickly, casting one last glance at Logan.
"Boss!" A guard rushed in, slightly out of breath.
"That girl is a disaster! A total disaster!" Logan snapped. "I underestimated her a lot."
"Should we go and take her, boss?"
Logan scoffed. "Take her and do what? Take her and have the courtesan house ruin my whole generation? She's only doing her job as a courtesan. She outsmarted Angel? Good for Quincy."
"The courtesan house can really do that?"
"Of course! Are you not in the business? This is what I have experienced before. I have seen an elite kill a courtesan over an issue with her companion. All the people that existed in his family were killed and his wealth taken away. He was left with nothing but a broken limb to wander around till his last days. What a waste of life!"
"We can kill her and push the blame on the guards or something. If they don't have any evidence, they can do nothing."
"I idiot! Is this a court case?" Logan growled. "Do you think the courtesan house needs any evidence to deal with someone? The courtesan house is so powerful that they keep secrets for everyone in the world. They don't have anyone to question them or anything. They have the biggest support. Once you are their enemy, your life is over."
"Who owns the courtesans house?"
"Nobody knows! Just forget it! We can't get rid of the girl that easily. That's why I brought Angel here. She will think of something, sure! I can't give in to Quincy like that and I need to recover my money back. I lost so much within these days."
"Are you going to keep Angel here, boss?"
"Yes! She is mine forever. She is not going anywhere."
Upstairs, Angel sat on the edge of the bed in Logan's room, her fingers trembling slightly as she removed her earrings. Celine stood nearby, watching her closely.
"Angel, are you going to stay with Logan now?" she asked, concern threading her voice.
"I don't have a choice," Angel whispered, not meeting her eyes.
"How about your sister?"
"I will look for her secretly. He must not know that I have a sister somewhere. He will take her and use her to threaten me, especially now that I'm no longer a courtesan. He can do anything to me. Once I find her, I will leave here immediately and go to where he can't find me."
"That is a good idea."
"Yes. How about your sickness? You need to start your treatments soon."
"I will. When I find my sister."
"What if we don't find her?"
Angel's hands froze. Her voice was low and filled with despair. "Then what will I be doing in life? It's better to just die if I can't find her."
"Angel!"
"Forget it. We need to be careful around Logan. He is very crazy."
"I understand."
