Chapter 6

  Before I knew it, I'd been here for a few days. My arrival was barely a secret anymore. I could tell everyone was curious to see the ‘rejected one’ after years.

  But despite what they were saying, I wasn't about to let that make me hide away.

  "Ready to go, Rowan?" I called.

  Rowan came running over, clutching his little backpack. "Are we going to see the wolves again, Mom?"

  I paused. I still didn't tell him what we truly were. He didn't know that those wolves around the pack were actually our kind in their other form.

  I'll tell him. Just not now.

  "Not really," I ruffled his dark hair. "We’re just taking a walk. Stay close to me, okay?"

  "Okay!"

  I held his hand and opened the door. We walked around the edge of the pack territory, but I could still hear the whispers all around.

  "She’s back?"

  "After all this time?"

  "I thought she died…"
