"Son..." Mum started but paused, her arms rubbing together as she tried to wipe away her tears.

"I'm so sorry, but I was told it all happened so many years ago, even before we were born." She sneezed, sucking in a deep breath.

"I heard of the story but never knew what it meant until thirty years ago, when you were born." She turned to Mrs. Smith, who sniffled, bowing her head slightly, tears streaming down her eyes. Then she spoke,

"Then you fell sick, terribly ill, and all attempts to heal you, both medically and out of the city, proved futile. Doctors from around the world were brought, but none was able to provide a solution to your illness. It became so severe that we couldn't afford to lose you if we let you stay with us." She lifted her head, drying her tears with the back of her arm.
