People anxiously searched the forest for Carl and Sophia. No one wanted to imagine anything happening to those two children.
Hiss... roar...
Jason, who had separated from Rick, continued forward. Suddenly, he stopped. A zombie loomed ahead, staggering blindly through the mist. The heavy fog had weakened the zombie's sense of smell, and it hadn't noticed Jason at all.
Jason quickly realized something important: in thick fog, zombies' senses were dulled. This was valuable information — it could be lifesaving later.
Not wanting to attract attention, Jason carefully circled to the left and quietly moved past. Even though the distance was close, the zombie neither saw him nor caught his scent.
This discovery gave Jason some comfort — Carl and Sophia might be safer than he had feared.
Just then, a notification flashed across Jason's mind:
"Random skill updated: Tracking Mastery!"
It felt almost like lying down and finding a pillow waiting — the perfect skill at the perfect time. Jason immediately sensed subtle changes in his body. His eyes sharpened, and his ears picked up even the faintest sounds.
For a few seconds, the world felt enhanced. Everything seemed clearer, data almost appearing in his vision when he focused on something. His hearing grew so sensitive that he could even hear faint shouts calling for Sophia and Carl.
Fueled by this new ability, Jason quickened his pace. After crossing a small river, he froze. His sharp eyes locked onto something half-submerged in the muddy water.
A small, mud-soaked doll.
"This must be Sophia's doll. They're close!" Jason thought, pulling it out carefully.
Near the riverbank, he spotted fresh, palm-sized footprints on a fallen tree trunk. The tracking skill confirmed it: the children had passed through here. Even better, there were no signs of zombie tracks nearby — only the children's footprints.
Jason's heart lifted. They were still alive.
"Ahhh…!"
A child's scream pierced the fog, straight ahead.
Jason's face turned serious. "Not good!" he muttered.
Without hesitation, he leapt across the river, his body moving like a bullet as he sprinted toward the sound.
The forest on this side felt older, almost primeval, with thick vines draping from ancient trees.
"I'll beat you to death! I'll beat you to death!"
When Jason found the source of the commotion, he stopped, stunned — then let out a breath of relief.
Before him stood a massive tree wrapped tightly in vines. Entangled against it was a zombie, completely trapped by the stubborn vines, unable to move.
Sophia and Carl, seeing the helpless zombie, had picked up sticks and branches and were fiercely whacking it with all their strength.
After the intense fear he had just felt, the scene struck Jason as both hilarious and heartwarming. Sweat trickled down his back from the earlier panic.
Roar!
Suddenly, the zombie roared in frustration and began thrashing wildly. The old vines, weakened by time and the children's beating, couldn't hold much longer.
Snap!
Roar!
With a violent struggle, the vines broke apart. The freed zombie immediately lunged at Carl and Sophia, its face so rotten that only its glaring eyeballs remained, and its foul, gaping mouth wide open.
