Back at home, driven by some mysterious force, I went to Jiang Yu's study.
Over the years, my extreme trust in him made me never check anything of his.
Opening the safe, under a pile of company documents, I found a locked small box that looked old.
After trying my birthday, our son's birthday, his birthday, and our wedding anniversary, none of which worked, I directly used tools to pry it open.
Inside were some photos and letters.
The woman in the photos was the same one I just saw at the club, and the letters were obscure yet sweet exchanges typical of high school sweethearts.
After reading everything, I trembled as I entered a date into the lock, and with a click, the password was correct.
It was their anniversary.
Without giving it much thought, I heard the sound of a door opening downstairs, and hurriedly wiped my tears and put everything back in place.
Jiang Yu was placed on the sofa, and my appearance interrupted the woman's attempt to kiss him.
"Is that the wife?" the woman stepped back hurriedly.
"My name is Wen Qing, Mr. Jiang drank too much, I brought him home."
The noise was too loud, and the little boy who should have been fast asleep appeared behind me, rubbing his sleepy eyes and mumbling, "Mom, it's so noisy."
Upon recognizing the person not far off, the boy became very excited, running directly to hug Wen Qing around the waist.
"Aunt Wen, why are you here?"
The familiar manner made it seem like I was the outsider in this situation.
Wen Qing pinched the little boy's face, "It's late, Fan, go rest."
My son listened to Wen Qing quite well and went upstairs, not even giving me, his mom, a glance as he passed by.
I forced myself to maintain composure while sending Wen Qing off, then returned to see the man sprawled on the sofa, and sat across from him all night.
In the morning, the man woke up with a displeased expression, and blurted out to me, "Why didn't you move me to the bed?"
"Why did you drink so much?" I was stiff and numb, supporting myself on the sofa to stand.
"It's the land on the west side of the city, too many competitors, difficult to acquire."
The man clearly didn't want to explain too much to me, and went to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of water.
Upon returning, he looked at the sumptuous spread on the table and asked in confusion, "Why didn't you put away yesterday's food?"
"Yesterday was our wedding anniversary, I waited for you all along." I replied.
Jiang Yu's face froze, then he awkwardly smiled, as in all previous times, trying to please and hugged me from behind, "Sorry, honey, I forgot. I'll buy you a few bags as compensation in a few days."
I was silent, and he assumed I had forgiven him, quickly releasing me and heading upstairs.
"Your new secretary around, how come I don't know about her?" I still couldn't hold back and asked.
"You mean Wen Qing? She's not new, just recently transferred to work with me, don't overthink it, there's nothing between us."
I only asked casually, yet he proactively explained, and I suddenly didn't know how to continue the conversation.
"Then what if I said that yesterday she wanted to kiss you?"
Jiang Yu impatiently turned back, "You must have seen wrong."
Coming out again, he was already showered, dressed in his business suit, and, facing the empty dining table, he criticized me, "Why didn't you make anything just now for breakfast?"
"That's right, Mom, why isn't there breakfast, I'm so hungry."
Our son came downstairs too.
Seeing my continued ill expression, Jiang Yu casually said, "If you're bored, go out shopping, don't spend your days focusing on what's around me, don't doubt things that aren't happening."
A sense of unfamiliarity filled my body, this was the man I've loved for eight years, yet at this moment I felt like I had nothing left with him.
A short while later, the doorbell rang, and it was Wen Qing again.
She was warmer than I, the hostess, carrying steaming hot food into the house.
"Hello, madam, I came to pick Mr. Jiang up for work, bought some food on the way, let's eat together."
"Where's Li?" I looked at Jiang Yu.
"Li had some family matters to attend to, he resigned. Until we recruit a new driver, I'll temporarily fill the role."
Wen Qing was as her name suggests, very affable and explained to me.
But a woman's intuition told me, she was demonstrating.
"Great!" Jiang Fan jumped around excitedly, "Does that mean Aunt Wen will be picking me up for school and dropping me off too?"
Also.
I caught that word.
What else had she done?
I looked toward Jiang Yu, but he acted as if everything was perfectly normal with the four of us in this situation.
"I'm tired, I'll go upstairs, you all do as you please."
The chill spreading from my heart made me unsteady, if I didn't escape, I'd definitely lose my composure.
There was no stopping, nor any concern.
My husband responded with an "Um," our son ignored, only Wen Qing, with a challenging smile in her eyes, looked at me.
