Rain hit the car window. Lucy sat in Cole's parked car, the world outside blurry. Inside the car, it was very quiet, like a TV without sound. Neither Lucy nor Cole had said anything since they left the meeting with Marla. Marla, who turned out to be more than just a rich person wanting to put money into Lucy's app. She was Cole's old business partner. And it seemed they were almost going to get married once.
Lucy had heard about unexpected turns in stories. She just didn't know she would be living inside one.
"I should've told you," Cole finally said. His voice was low, careful, like he was walking on thin ice.
Lucy stared straight ahead at the wet windshield. "You think?" she asked, her voice flat.
"I didn't know she'd show up again. After what happened with our old company, I never thought—" Cole stopped, picking his words.
