Duel of Prodigies

Chapter 4 — Duel of Prodigies

The afternoon sun blazed down on the Knight Academy's arena.

Students crowded the edges, buzzing with excitement.

The two strongest newcomers — Synoh, the mysterious swordsman from nowhere, and Lux, the pride of a noble house — were about to clash.

Even the instructors stood quietly, eager to see the outcome.

---

Synoh and Lux faced each other at the center.

Both wore light training armor, blades gleaming in the sun.

No words.

Only understanding.

They both lived for this.

The bell rang.

---

Lux moved first.

A blur of golden hair and flashing steel.

Synoh met him head-on.

Sword against sword.

Light against shadow.

Steel clashed with a sound like thunder.

Sparks flew from every collision.

Neither gave ground.

Lux's strikes were graceful, almost dance-like, cutting through the air with surgical precision.

Synoh's movements were wild yet controlled — every dodge, every slash flowing like water around solid stone.

The crowd was silent, breathless.

---

Lux feinted left, then struck with a brilliant lunge —

Synoh twisted midair, dodging by a hair's breadth, countering with a spinning slash.

Their swords met — shockwaves rattled the arena.

Each fought with everything they had learned.

Each adapting, reading, and responding faster than the eye could follow.

---

After countless exchanges, both stood apart, chests heaving, sweat dripping.

Their swords lowered slightly.

Not out of exhaustion.

Out of respect.

Both knew:

Neither could easily defeat the other.

---

The instructor finally stepped in, raising his hand.

"Enough!"

The crowd erupted in cheers and stunned whispers.

"A draw!?"

"Incredible!"

"I've never seen anything like it!"

Synoh and Lux sheathed their swords at the same time.

Lux offered a small smile. "You're better than I expected."

Synoh smirked lightly. "You too."

They bumped fists — a silent agreement.

Rivals.

Equals.

---

Later That Evening...

In the instructor's office, Synoh and Lux stood side by side.

The old instructor eyed them like a general studying two rare weapons.

"You two..." he muttered, stroking his chin, "...you're wasting time in basic lessons."

Synoh blinked. Lux raised an eyebrow.

"I'm assigning you a special mission," the instructor finally said, sliding a scroll across the table.

"Bandits have been raiding the eastern trade routes. Scouts report possible rogue mages among them."

He leaned forward, voice low.

"Your job: investigate. Eliminate threats if necessary. Prove you're worthy of skipping ranks."

Synoh's heart raced.

His first real mission.

Lux's eyes gleamed with excitement.

Both boys nodded without hesitation.

"We won't disappoint you," Lux said.

Synoh said nothing — but his eyes burned with determination.

---

Outside, As They Prepared to Leave...

Fel's voice rumbled quietly in Synoh's mind.

"Looks like our real journey begins, partner."

Synoh smiled faintly, gripping his sword tightly.

He would not fail.

Not to Fel.

Not to Synix.

Not to himself.
