Chapter 9 — Bonds That Shattered
Days passed since the duel in the hall.
And something... strange happened.
Edward, the once-feared bully, was now walking around the academy with a strained smile, treating everyone with kindness — but with such an annoying fake face that it made some students even more uncomfortable.
Synoh and Lux watched him from a bench near the training field, chewing on bread from the cafeteria.
Lux chuckled. "I'm glad. He's trying."
Synoh smirked. "Yeah, trying to smile like he's in pain."
Lux laughed harder, nearly dropping his bread.
After a moment, Synoh turned to him seriously. "So, about you and Edward... mind telling me the full story?"
Lux leaned back, exhaling deeply. "I'll tell you... if you tell me about Fel first."
Synoh raised an eyebrow. A stare-down followed — two stubborn prodigies locked in a silent battle of wills.
Eventually, they both laughed and agreed with a handshake.

Synoh's Story: Fel, the Bond Beyond Words
Synoh leaned forward, resting his arms on his knees. His voice softened.
"Fel... he's not just a pet. He's my companion, my family. Since I was a kid, when my mother and I were running... he was always by my side."
Synoh smiled faintly, the memories flooding back.
"We're like... soulmates, I guess. No matter how bad things got, Fel would always be there. He's more than just my sword spirit. He's my brother."
Lux listened carefully, the weight of Synoh's words settling in his chest.
"I see," Lux said softly. "You're lucky."

Lux's Story: A Promise Made, A Dream Shattered
Lux took a deep breath.
"Remember when I told you about Princess Akane and the promise I made?"
Synoh nodded.
"Actually... it wasn't just me and Akane. It was three of us. Me, Akane... and Edward."
Synoh blinked, surprised.
"We grew up together," Lux continued. "We played, we trained, we dreamed. We were inseparable — like three pieces of one heart."
His voice grew distant, as if seeing the past clearly.
"Princess Akane... she always wanted to change the world. A place where all races — humans, demons, demi-humans, elves, dragons — could live together peacefully."
Synoh's eyes widened slightly at the dream's scale.
"I told her... that to do something that big, she'd need a strong and kind general she could trust. That's when Akane said — both Edward and I would support her."
Lux smiled bitterly.
"I promised to become her General. Edward promised to become her Vice-General. We even carved it into a tree near the palace."
Synoh listened silently, feeling the bond they once had.
"I thought we'd always be together. That nothing could break us."
Lux's hands clenched slightly.
"But then... Edward's parents were caught doing illegal things. Slave trading, black market deals, corruption. Akane's father — the King — couldn't protect them."
Synoh's mouth tightened in understanding.
"I don't know all the details," Lux said, voice low. "Edward disappeared for a while. His uncle — a cruel noble — took him away."
He paused, his eyes clouded.
"When Edward came back... he wasn't the same. It's like a part of him died."
The two boys sat in silence for a moment, the evening wind brushing against their uniforms.
Synoh finally spoke. "And you still tried to bring him back."
Lux chuckled softly. "Yeah. I'm stubborn like that."
They both smiled — a silent understanding between two people carrying heavy promises.
