Into the Silverpine Shadows

Chapter 12 — Into the Silverpine Shadows

Silverpine Forest was alive with the rustle of leaves and the call of unseen beasts.

The old Greythorn Fort loomed ahead, half-eaten by vines and decay.

Lux ordered the squad to move cautiously, splitting into smaller scouting teams:

Lux, Synoh, Edward together.

Hugo, Claire, Lira as secondary scouts.

Yuta, Mina, Emily, and Marcus to secure camp supplies.

"Stick to the plan," Lux reminded them, voice clear. "If you see anything strange, report immediately. No fights without orders. Got it?"

"Yeah, yeah, Captain," Claire grinned, flipping a dagger casually.

"We'll be careful," Hugo said seriously, tapping his shield.

"I-I'll keep watch with detection spells," Lira added shyly.

Lux smiled at them briefly, but Synoh caught a flicker of worry in his friend's eyes.

Still, they pushed forward.

Later, around the campfire that night...

The squad gathered, exhausted but safe. They shared simple dried meats and bread.

Claire juggled two apples in the firelight, earning laughter from Emily and Marcus.

"You'd think in a dangerous mission, you'd act serious for once," Yuta teased, shaking his head.

Claire laughed. "Seriousness will kill you faster than swords, my old man always said."

Hugo chuckled deeply. "He also said you talk too much."

Everyone laughed. Even Synoh cracked a small smile.

Lira, sitting next to Claire, spoke softly. "After this... maybe we can all go to the capital festival together?"

"Sounds good," Marcus grinned. "First rounds on Lux."

"Eh?!" Lux nearly choked on his bread. "Why me?!"

"Because you're the Captain," Claire teased.

They all laughed again, the campfire warmth making them forget — for a brief moment — the darkness that lurked beyond.

Fel's voice murmured in Synoh's mind:

"Moments like this... you must protect, Synoh."

He tightened his grip on his sword slightly, but said nothing.
