Chapter 6:Nen X Me

Under Jin Freecss' simple explanation, Kevin Carpenberg gained a rough understanding of what "aura" was—and the more accurate term used when manipulating it: "Nen."

All living beings possess aura. It's the manifestation of their life energy.

However, not all beings can control or utilize the life energy they emit. Only through strict training and insight can one learn to manipulate and use it.

Those who can do so are called "Nen users."

Kevin found the term a bit odd, thinking, "Shouldn't it be something like a Qi Master or Energy Cultivator?"

When he was about to ask further, Jin Freecss cut him off.

"It's not that I don't want to tell you. It's just… I have a general idea of your situation now," Jin said, pointing at him and explaining briefly. "You're in a very unique condition—I'm sure you're aware of it too. You should already know that the 'you' from before was also a Nen user. Given your circumstances, it's best to combine explanation with rehab. That way, it'll be more efficient."

Kevin nodded. Jin was right. He wanted to say, Then let's start now, but found himself unable to speak up. After all, in a sense, Jin didn't owe him anything. If anything, he owed Jin.

But Jin interrupted his thoughts. "It's not that I don't want to train you," he said, shaking his phone slightly. "It's that I have something important to do—and I've already been delayed because of you. Explaining everything and guiding you through rehab isn't something that can be done in a day or two."

With that, he stood up, sighed with a trace of melancholy, and looked at Kevin with what seemed like a nostalgic gaze. "To be honest, I'd love to train and teach you myself, but I've got more pressing matters. If you trust me, I'll find you a teacher. Once I'm free, I'll come back to check on you. How about that?"

Kevin didn't know Jin well—they'd only spent a day together.

He could only judge that the man probably wasn't a bad person, and he was certainly very interested in Kevin's situation. Without thinking too much, Kevin nodded.

"Thanks."

Jin smiled and shook his head. "Don't worry about it. You don't think of me as a friend, and I feel the same. But as a Hunter, I always fulfill my deals—you can trust me on that." As he spoke, he sprang into action and dialed a number on his phone.

"Hello."

———

A petite girl stared at her phone after the call ended, deep in thought.

"A teaching mission? That's odd."

She had just received a commission from a very famous Nen user—Jin Freecss.

As a well-known Hunter herself, she had of course heard the name. The man was renowned, though she hadn't had much interaction with him. Most of what she knew came from his reputation and praise from her old man.

To be honest, she hadn't been inclined to accept the job—even if it was from Jin.

But as a Gem Hunter, the price he offered was enough to make her take action. Besides, she was in a perfect position to take on the task right now.

She folded up the magazine full of handsome men that had been lying on her lap and jumped down from the stool, calling into another room: "Yungu, we're heading out."

"Ah? Okay!"

A cheerful male voice responded. A tall young man wearing glasses came out, dressed in a martial arts uniform, as if in the middle of some judo training.

"Even if it's casual training, you should maintain proper posture!" the girl scolded with dissatisfaction.

"Ah! Sorry! Sorry!" The young man bowed repeatedly, adjusting his awkwardly worn uniform.

———

"This should be your former camp. Take some time to look around and see if anything jogs your memory," Jin said, handing Kevin a stack of documents. "Here's what I found about you—your registered address, property details, and so on."

With that, he swiftly drove off in a jeep, leaving Kevin alone at the crude campsite.

"Whew."

Taking a deep breath, Kevin composed himself.

"Alone now… in a strange world… Well, I'm here anyway."

Muttering to himself in a weird tone to stay positive, Kevin looked around the camp.

It seemed to be his previous setup. Nearby sat a black jeep covered in fallen leaves.

The camp was extremely basic—just a pitched tent. Inside was nothing but a sleeping bag.

Clearly, his former self hadn't intended to stay long.

After a quick tidy-up, Kevin got into the jeep, grabbed his belongings, and started the engine.

Thankfully, the vehicle's layout wasn't much different from what he knew in his past life—the controls were exactly the same. The only thing that felt out of place was the phone: a clunky, brick-like device with no touchscreen, let alone GPS.

He drove while studying a physical map.

By nightfall, he finally exited the nature reserve.

Guards along the way didn't stop him, and he made it into the city without incident. He checked into a hotel.

After dinner, he sat on the balcony, gazing at the brightly lit city below. It looked no different from the world he used to know. But deep down, he understood—this was no longer the same world.

Thoughts about the future stirred in his mind.

He'd stopped by an internet café earlier and walked around the city for a while.

One thing was certain: in terms of combat ability, he was pretty much unbeatable among ordinary people—unless they had guns. But even then, he had one himself. That gave him a sense of security.

First, he needed to fully understand "himself"—his name, identity, social connections.

Then, he would leave the city and head to his "home" using public transportation.

He would get to know this world and wait for his new teacher. Jin's recommendation would surely be reliable.

As for money, he wasn't worried in the short term.

He had already checked with the bank. His accounts held a total of 37 million Jennie.

This currency seemed roughly equivalent in value to Japanese yen from his past life, so he used that as a basis to adapt to this new economy.

That amount of money would more than suffice for now. It gave him solid footing—and peace of mind.
