Chapter -21 Stirrings on Moon

Outer Sector Outpost 7, Imperial Periphery

The outpost settled into another tense night cycle. Less than twenty-four hours remained until the Sector Command fleet's projected arrival at the system edge. Every passing hour felt like a tightening spring. Valerius remained stationed in the analysis room, monitoring the feeds, the System running constant background analyses on sensor data and communication intercepts.

He had decided against attempting another descent to Sub-Level 4 tonight. The System's risk assessment remained stubbornly high, factoring in both Kaelen's persistent scrutiny of logs and the unpredictable interference from the anomaly below. Pushing his luck now, so close to the fleet's arrival, felt strategically unsound. He would have to rely on his current Beginner Wargod strength and the System's tactical edge if conflict erupted before reinforcements arrived.

His focus remained locked on Drone Prime-3's feed from Moon 7C. Crater EC-117 had remained inert since the micro-seismic event, a frustrating blank slate. Valerius ran another diagnostic on the drone's passive sensors, confirming they were operating optimally. The Scorpions were simply masters of emission control, or whatever they were doing required minimal energy output.

Suddenly, the System flagged a priority alert, overriding Valerius's current task.

*<

 * Localized Gravitic Disturbance (Magnitude: Low, consistent with small vessel launch prep).

 * Brief Thermal Bloom (Consistent with shielded engine ignition sequence).

 * Trace Ionized Particle Trail Detected (Vector: Departing lunar surface, low acceleration).

CONFIRMED: Small vessel launch sequence initiated from subsurface location within EC-117.>>*

Valerius snapped upright, his attention fully focused on the enhanced feed from Prime-3. On the visual spectrum, filtered through layers of System enhancement, he could just make out a faint distortion rising from the center of the crater floor – a shimmer of active camouflage against the dusty grey surface. It resolved into a sleek, dark shape, much smaller than a frigate, perhaps a heavy shuttle or light courier vessel, ascending slowly, almost cautiously, from a previously invisible opening.

"Commander Vorlag," Valerius's voice was sharp over the command channel, overriding non-essential comms traffic. "Activity confirmed on Moon 7C. Small vessel, likely shuttle-class, launching from subsurface facility in Crater EC-117. Ascending now under active camouflage."

The command center, instantly alerted, focused all available passive sensors on the designated coordinates. Vorlag's voice came back, tight with tension. "Can we track it? Get an ID?"

"Tracking initiated, Commander," Valerius replied, watching the System attempt to lock onto the faint energy trail. "Vessel design is non-standard Imperial, possibly modified Syndicate tech. Camouflage is high-grade, multi-spectrum. Maintaining passive lock is difficult, active scan would reveal our drone."

The shuttle cleared the crater rim and began a slow acceleration burn, its trajectory angling away from both the outpost and the main Scorpion fleet in Grid 11, heading towards the system's outer edge.

"Where is it going?" Vorlag demanded.

'System, extrapolate trajectory. Cross-reference with known jump points and potential destinations based on intercepted 'Chimera' data.'

"Trajectory indicates departure from the system towards Uncharted Region 774, Commander," Valerius reported. "It's avoiding standard jump points. Purpose unclear, but likely transporting high-value assets related to Project Chimera."

A frustrated silence hung in the command center. A tangible piece of the puzzle was escaping right before their eyes, and they were powerless to stop it.

Lieutenant Kaelen's voice cut through the tension. "Commander, if this shuttle is indeed transporting something vital, perhaps related to this 'Chimera', shouldn't our focus be on it? Dedicating our best drone to passively watching a moon while the prize potentially slips away seems… questionable."

It was another subtle jab, questioning Valerius's strategy and resource allocation.

"Drone Prime-3 is our only asset capable of monitoring that moon without detection, Lieutenant," Valerius countered coolly, not taking the bait directly. "And the 'Crimson Fury' cruiser group remains on the surface. We don't know if this shuttle is the main prize, or merely a component. Abandoning surveillance of the primary Scorpion force on the moon would be strategically unsound until we understand their full intentions."

"Lieutenant Valerius is correct," Vorlag interjected, cutting off any further debate. "We maintain surveillance on both the departing shuttle and the forces remaining on Moon 7C. Track that shuttle for as long as possible, Valerius. Relay all data to Sector Command instantly. Maybe they can vector an intercept course further out."

Valerius acknowledged, turning his full attention back to the fleeing shuttle's faint signature. It accelerated steadily, its camouflage holding, making detailed scans impossible. It was a ghost, carrying unknown secrets away from their grasp.

The launch changed the dynamic. The Scorpions weren't just waiting; they were executing the next phase of their plan. Whatever Project Chimera was, a piece of it was now mobile, heading for the darkness beyond Imperial control. The clock ticked louder now, counting down not just to the fleet's arrival, but perhaps to the culmination of the Scorpions' mysterious objective. The vigil continued, but now it was tinged with the bitter taste of watching a vital clue escape into the void.
