Outer Sector Outpost 7, Imperial Periphery
The twenty-four hours following the arrival of the supply convoy 'Star Chaser' were a blur of activity for the Navy personnel on Outpost 7, and a period of intense, internal preparation for Valerius. The first deep-penetration scanner unit was already on its way to Moon 7C with Investigator Thorne, its departure a tangible symbol of the investigation's momentum. The second unit, designated for the outpost itself, was undergoing final assembly and calibration in a heavily guarded, shielded hangar bay.
Valerius knew its deployment was imminent, likely as soon as Thorne transmitted her initial comprehensive findings from the moon. He felt like a chess player whose opponent was slowly, methodically positioning a queen for checkmate.
He dedicated every available moment to his Wargod consolidation and practice. The 35% progress towards Mid-Level Wargod, achieved through the risky acquisition of the unstable plasma core, felt like a precious, hard-won beachhead. He couldn't expand it further without access to the core, and that was now impossible. So, he focused on mastery.
His Spatial Sense became an extension of his will. He could sit in his quarters and 'walk' the nearby corridors, mapping the energy signatures of Navy patrols, noting their routes, their numbers, the subtle differences in their kinetic fields. He identified the locations of newly installed Navy sensor nodes, their faint energy hums distinct from the outpost's older systems. He even managed to briefly 'feel' the powerful, complex energy signature of the second scanner unit in its hangar bay, a sleeping giant waiting to awaken.

He ran stealth simulations relentlessly, the System creating virtual environments patrolled by advanced sensors and hostile cultivators. He practiced moving like a whisper, suppressing his energy signature to near-zero, utilizing environmental clutter and nanite-generated micro-distortions to break up his profile. His success rate against simulated Tier-3 Navy sensors improved, but the System's assessment against the Tier-5 deep-penetration scanners remained grim: direct evasion was highly improbable if the scanner was actively focused on his location.
Lieutenant Kaelen remained a persistent shadow. Valerius noted, via the System's passive monitoring, that Kaelen had been granted limited access to some of the preliminary data from Thorne's initial scan of the outpost anomaly (the one flagged low priority before the Moon 7C link was established). Kaelen was now cross-referencing that data with his own logs of the 'sensor ghost' and the energy transient near the decommissioned Xenobotanical Lab. He was building his case, meticulously, patiently.
Valerius received a summons to the main command center. Lieutenant Commander Jian wanted an updated threat assessment on the Scorpion fleet in Grid 11, given their continued inactivity. Commander Vorlag was also present, looking increasingly like a figurehead in his own command center, surrounded by Navy officers and their advanced technology.
"Lieutenant Valerius," Jian began, gesturing to the tactical display showing the inert Scorpion fleet. "Over seventy-two hours of inactivity since their retreat. What's your assessment? Are they truly trapped? Waiting? Or is this a deception?"
Valerius presented his analysis, informed by the System. "Lieutenant Commander, their current posture is defensively sound but strategically passive. The interdictor fields remain active, effectively trapping them as much as deterring us. My assessment, based on their previous actions and the resources expended on Moon 7C, suggests they are unlikely to be simply waiting for destruction. The most probable scenario remains a concealed secondary objective within the Grid 11 asteroid field, or they are awaiting a specific trigger or external rendezvous related to 'Project Chimera' – perhaps linked to the shuttle that escaped."
"A secondary objective?" Jian mused. "We've run broad sensor sweeps of Grid 11. Nothing beyond the main fleet and standard asteroid clutter."
"With respect, sir," Valerius countered, "standard sweeps might miss a deeply embedded or heavily shielded operation, especially within a dense asteroid field known for sensor interference. The Scorpions have demonstrated sophisticated emission control and camouflage capabilities."
Jian considered this. "A valid point. I'll recommend Investigator Thorne authorize a targeted deep-scan of Grid 11 once the Moon 7C and Outpost 7 primary investigations are concluded, if resources permit." He then turned, his gaze sharpening slightly. "Speaking of scans, Lieutenant, the initial survey of the Omega chamber on Moon 7C is nearing completion. Investigator Thorne anticipates beginning the deployment of the second scanner unit here, beneath Outpost 7, within the next twelve to sixteen hours. Your cooperation, and that of Commander Vorlag's garrison, will be expected."
Sixteen hours. The final countdown had begun.
Valerius inclined his head. "Of course, Lieutenant Commander. We will provide any assistance required."
As he left the command center, he felt the weight of the approaching scan. He had done everything he could to cover his digital tracks, to suppress his energy, to prepare. The unstable core remained hidden, a silent bomb of potential. His Wargod abilities were honed but still far from the overwhelming power needed to openly defy the Navy.
He returned to his quarters, the outpost around him humming with the quiet efficiency of the 7th Battle Group. The unblinking eye of the scanner was turning towards the ground beneath his feet. Soon, the secrets of Outpost 7 – both its ancient anomaly and his own more recent transgressions – would be laid bare. All he could do now was brace for the revelation.
