Author's POV
Richard couldn't help but wonder who exactly would be threatening him. "Why would someone actually want me dead, warning me to stay away from the case?" It seemed as though he was not the only one aware of his father's death being something mysterious. Aside from that, he also found it weird who would know about him being the son of his father despite the fact that his father had kept it very discreet about his family's members and did not even let anybody know he had a son. He didn't even hand over the company to his son directly.
Yet Richard was so confused as he stared at the letter. Mary noticed that he was slowly drifting into deep thoughts, and she rushed towards him as she held his hand. "Stop thinking about it, Richard. We are going to find out who is doing this, okay? Just calm yourself down and relax. It won't be as difficult as you make it seem. The person won't be able to run away forever. Very soon, we'll catch whoever this person is, and we're going to make sure that person's life is a living hell. Do you understand?" Mary said with assurance.
Richard scoffed. "Make a rich person's life a living hell? This person is literally untraceable," he yelled and threw the paper to the ground. Dorian picked it up and scanned it again, trying to see if he could get any information. "The person is literally invincible. Even if we were to give this thing a thorough investigation, we wouldn't even find fingerprints on it. It is a clean sheet of paper. It has no way of helping us at all," Dorian tried to make Mary understand.
Mary suddenly looked away, trying to think of a solution. "Fine, let me accept your offer. We would fake it. I would pretend to be your fiancée until we catch whoever it is. We don't know; it could be Anna. She can be pretending, trying to make you say some things when you make her feel bitter. Then she would not be able to hold in that urge. And of course, she would let the whole world know about it, and she would let you know about whatever she's sending you in a threat letter," Mary said.
Richard shook his head negatively. "I am not sure it is Anna. I know the things she is capable of. I know what she can do. But this? Something as reckless and childish as this? I don't think she would want to do anything as dumb as this. Trust me, I know her very well. She won't dare," Richard said as Mary laughed silently.
"And how much trust do you have in Anna? Someone who betrayed you with your own friend? How much do you trust her? If you really trust her, then it's fine. But I'm just telling you to be safe. Don't just believe her fully. Give a chance of doubt. And besides, I don't even trust her. Mostly that Joe, who now knows that I am the owner of the restaurant. Of course, he's going to try to find a way to make your life a living hell," Mary said, trying to make Richard understand as he nodded.
"Whatever, whatever. We would go with my plan and... and... and make everyone's life, believe me, hell while I find out who is doing this. I can't wait anymore. I need to assign somebody. I need somebody. Dorian, find somebody. Anybody. Someone good enough to investigate. I want to know what happened. I can't continue to live like this, not knowing what happened to my dad and why he's in the situation that he is," he said angrily.
Richard stepped into the car, but he was not as bold as he made it seem. He was so deep in thought, he felt so bitter, wondering what could have possibly happened. Even though he tried his best to push things away and just focus on what his dad had told him to do, focus on his duty, according to what his father said, he just couldn't stop thinking about it. It was making no sense at all.
He just did not understand why. "Why exactly did my father have to die that way? Why did he have to watch my mother in cold blood? If they were really keeping their identity a secret, how come I never found out about it?" he thought as the car started and Mary sat beside him. She placed her hand on his, bringing him back to realization as he smiled at her, trying to reassure her.
"I am fine. Just because I look stressed doesn't mean I am thinking. I am just worried. I am worried. I don't know why, but I feel like something is wrong somewhere. Something is not right. Yes, I want to keep my dad's legacy in the right place. But what if I am just wasting my time and that is not what I am destined to do at all? I am confused, Mary. How do I go about it?" Richard said, now pouring out all his emotions towards Mary as she was speechless.
She was supposed to stay professional. She was supposed to just stay where Richard's father had placed her. But now Richard was involving her in almost everything, making her seem like one of his most trusted allies ever.
"I know that you might find it hard to believe what I'm about to say, but I promise you, you would get your revenge on everybody, on everything they ever dare to do to you. You get to pay all of them back", Mary assured Richard as he smiled.
"You are all I have got, after all". Richard said now feeling suddenly so safe with Mary…but what Richard couldn't get out of his head was, Would he ever be able to stop loving Anna? Even with what she did, he still found it hard to move on from everything.
