The Stoneguard Pass receded behind Drake as he ventured into the next stretch of wilderness marked on his [Cartographer's Route Maps]: the Veridian Highlands. This region was a stark contrast to the plains he'd just left – a rolling expanse of high plateaus, sharp rocky tors, and deep valleys carved by ancient glaciers. Hardy, wind-swept grasses clung to the slopes, and stunted, gnarled trees grew in sheltered hollows. The air was thinner here, cooler, and the mobs were a step up in challenge: packs of agile Level 17 Highland Raptors with razor-sharp talons, and solitary, lumbering Level 18 Stone Golems that blended almost perfectly with the rocky terrain.
Drake's progress was steady. His perfected 100% SCR [Basic Slash] and [Defend], coupled with the ever-stacking [Relentless Assault], allowed him to handle these new threats efficiently. Against the fast-moving Raptors, Perfect Defends negated their diving attacks, and his high damage output, especially when [Relentless Assault] reached high stacks, dispatched them quickly. The Stone Golems, with their immense physical resistance, took longer to wear down, but his perfect execution meant he took minimal damage in return, slowly chipping away at their stony hides. He used [Ground Stomp] (still only 75% SCR) sparingly to create brief openings or interrupt a Golem's powerful slam attack.
After a long day of travel and numerous minor skirmishes, as the virtual sun began to set, casting long purple shadows across the highlands, Drake found a sheltered alcove amongst a cluster of large boulders to make camp. He started a small (virtual) campfire for light and a sense of comfort, then settled down to review his unique items.
He pulled out the three artifacts that felt intrinsically linked: the smooth, grey [Weathered Alvari Artifact] disc, the dark metal [Broken Twin Blade Hilt], and the recently acquired [Alvari Tuning Stone]. He laid them out on a flat rock.
"The disc hums faintly. The hilt echoes with 'mirrored purpose'. And this Tuning Stone... Scholar Willem said it reacted to stable Mana flows or Alvari devices before the Shattering. Maybe..."
He activated [Relic Hunter], his perception sharpening, boosted slightly by his [Cartographer's Compass]. He scanned his immediate surroundings. The skill highlighted the usual faint energy traces of the highlands, but also picked up a slightly stronger, more coherent Alvari energy signature emanating from a section of the largest boulder forming his shelter – a section mostly buried by earth and scree.
"An Alvari energy source right here? Convenient."
Curious, Drake used his sword and hands to clear away the loose earth and smaller rocks from the base of the boulder. He uncovered a flat, circular stone plinth, clearly of Alvari make, about a foot in diameter, with intricate but eroded symbols carved into its surface. It pulsed with a very faint, almost imperceptible energy.
He took the [Alvari Tuning Stone] in his hand and held it close to the plinth. The moment the dark shard neared the ancient stone, it began to vibrate gently in his palm. A soft, low hum, barely audible above the wind, emanated from it. Then, ethereal lines of faint blue light briefly traced a complex geometric pattern on the Tuning Stone's smooth surface, pulsing twice in a specific sequence (a triangle forming, then a circle within it, pulse-pulse) before fading completely. The humming stopped.
Drake stared at the Tuning Stone, then at the plinth. [Perfect Recall] had flawlessly recorded the fleeting visual and auditory sequence.
"It reacted! The Stone displayed a pattern... a code, maybe? Or a resonant frequency? Triangle, circle, two pulses... What does it mean?" He tried holding the Tuning Stone near his [Broken Twin Blade Hilt] and then the [Weathered Alvari Artifact] disc, but there was no reaction from either the stone or the artifacts. "So, the Stone reacts to external Alvari energy sources and shows... something. This pattern must be a clue for later, for a specific mechanism or lock. Another piece for Elder Jian, perhaps." The mystery of the three artifacts deepened, their interconnectedness feeling more tangible now.
He carefully stored the artifacts logged out and felt tired into sleep. The next morning he quickly eat breakfast before logging back in and continuing his journey north, following the guidance of the Cartographer's maps. After another full day of travel through the Veridian Highlands, clearing more Level 18-19 mobs like Highland Sky-Talons (larger, more aggressive raptors) and territorial Grizzled Peak Bears, the landscape began another subtle transformation. The air felt different, carrying a faint tang of salt, and the distant mountains to the north seemed to have a slightly different hue, perhaps reflecting a larger body of water or a different geological makeup. The Alvari ruins integrated into the landscape – crumbling aqueducts, weathered road markers – started appearing more frequently and looked subtly more advanced. [Relic Hunter] picked up stronger, more stable ambient Mana readings in the air.
His Cartographer's map indicated a specific trail: the "Highland Traverse," which promised an "Overview" at its northernmost point. Intrigued, Drake followed this route as it climbed steeply up the side of a towering mesa. The ascent was arduous, but the path was clearly marked on his map and confirmed by ancient, almost invisible Alvari trail symbols his [Relic Hunter] skill picked out.
Finally, he reached the summit – a wide, windswept plateau. He walked to the northern edge. The view that opened up before him stole his breath. The Veridian Highlands fell away sharply into a vast, sprawling coastal plain far below. And there, nestled on the shores of a glittering azure sea, dominating the horizon, was a city of immense scale. Massive, gleaming white walls, interspersed with impossibly tall, slender spires that seemed to pierce the clouds, enclosed a metropolis that dwarfed Oakhaven many times over. A great river snaked its way from the mountains to the east, flowing through the city and out into the sea. Even from this incredible distance, he could sense its vibrant energy.
"Silverhaven... It has to be. It's... massive."
Drake stood there for a long time, just taking in the sight. He had traveled for many days in-game, faced numerous challenges, grown significantly in level and skill. This was his next major destination, the place Master Kallan had directed him to, the city where Elder Jian and perhaps the answers to the mystery of the Twin Blade Hilt resided.
"Phase one of the journey is complete. Reached the Silverhaven regional border. Now for the final leg, and then... finding Jian."
He was still Level 17, halfway to 18 from the recent travel and encounters. He felt a renewed sense of purpose, the distant sight of Silverhaven a powerful motivator. He took one last look at the sprawling city on the horizon, then turned to find the safest descent path marked on his Cartographer's maps, ready to continue the journey.
