Chapter 35: Old Friend

Ten minutes later, Link, fully satisfied, stuffed a total of fifteen hunger-relief nutrient potions into his spatial pocket, and then swaggered out toward the door.

Although it was already deep into the night, and Snape hadn't given him a night pass like before, the current Link no longer cared.

You must know, he now holds the secret that Filch is a Squib (although only Filch thinks it's a secret), and Filch absolutely wouldn't risk exposing that to cause him trouble.

But just as Link reached out to push open the stone door, Snape's voice once again came from behind him.

"Wait."

Link slowly turned his head back, still holding his spatial pocket protectively in his arms, looking like he was afraid Snape would come snatch it.

This made Snape so angry that he was practically fuming. He took a few heavy breaths before finally tossing the usual night pass to Link, then said with his gloomy tone, "I know every time you leave here, you wander all over the place doing little kid games of pretend. But I'm warning you, if you don't want to run into any accidents and die a painful, miserable death, then don't go into the corridor on the fourth floor to the right side. Understood?"

"Ah, I got it, Professor, don't worry."

While saying this, Link stepped straight into the darkness without turning back, leaving Snape alone in the office silently watching him.

Boom!

No one knows how much time passed, but the stone door slammed shut again.

And now in the darkness, Link also raised his wand.

"Lumos."

A soft light glowed from the tip of his wand, lighting up the slightly eerie corridor inside Hogwarts Castle, and also illuminating Link's smiling face.

Right now, Link was truly happy. Because today's experience in Snape's office confirmed one of his suspicions.

That is, although Snape often mocks him coldly on the surface, deducts points from him in class for no reason, and even forcibly made him drink a potion last time, in fact, Snape's attitude toward Link was friendly.

This wasn't baseless. Snape is a classic tsundere, people like him can't be measured by normal people's standards.

In Link's opinion, Snape was willing to drink that special calming potion with him, willing to answer Link's questions outside class time (even though he later got annoyed and shut up), and even willing to give him so many nutrient potions, that already showed he was taking good care of Link.

Otherwise, with Snape's temper, someone else would've been thrown out a long time ago.

As for why Snape would treat him so well, Link actually had a guess.

That is, his mother, Madam Flamel.

Of course, this doesn't mean Snape treated Link well because of Madam Flamel's power and influence. With Snape's status and strength, he wouldn't do such a shameful thing.

Link's idea was, maybe his cheap mother and Snape already knew each other a long time ago, and might even have had some feelings.

'Maybe, the two of them even… No, no, no!'

At that point in thought, he quickly shook his head, tossing all those messy ideas out of his mind.

Snape has only ever loved Lily, such a loyal man having a thing with his cheap mother? That's just a joke.

Mocking his ridiculous thoughts a bit, Link then quickly walked into the darkness.

———

Half an hour later, Link finally reached his destination for tonight.

A girls' bathroom.

Of course, Link sneaking into the girls' bathroom at night wasn't for anything perverted, but to visit an old friend.

But before meeting this old friend who lives in the girls' bathroom, Link still had some work to do.

By the light of his wand, he carefully opened every stall in the bathroom, and lifted every toilet lid. Only after making sure that there was no one, or other ghost-like things, did he breathe a sigh of relief and shift his gaze to a bronze faucet above the bathroom sink. There, a snake-shaped pattern was engraved.

Link narrowed his eyes, stared at the snake pattern, then slightly brewed his emotions and said, "Open."

A shocking scene occurred.

What came out of Link's mouth wasn't human language, but a series of slithery and deep hissing sounds.

And whether it was the muscular twitching caused by that special vocalization or something else entirely, Link's expression at that moment became extremely twisted, looking particularly sinister and frightening in the darkness of night.

But right after his voice fell, the snake-patterned faucet suddenly emitted a dazzling red light, began spinning rapidly, and eventually caused the entire sink to disappear from Link's view, leaving behind only a massive pipe with a diameter of over three meters.

Link took a deep breath, leaned forward to peer into the bottomless pipe, and hesitated about whether or not to jump in.

But just as he was hesitating, a series of dense rustling sounds suddenly came from within the pipe. Before Link could react, he saw a huge, terrifying serpent's head burst out.

Link could swear, this was the biggest snake he had ever seen in his life.

Its body was at least two meters thick, and covered all over in thick green scales that looked extremely solid. But the most attention-grabbing part was still its pair of lantern-like glowing golden vertical pupils in the night. The moment Link made eye contact, he felt a strong sense of dread.

This sudden scene scared Link so badly he instinctively jumped back a few steps and covered his eyes.

You must know, the creature before him was a Basilisk.

This terrifying monster, first invented by ancient Greek dark wizards by hatching a chicken egg under a toad, not only had one of the most poisonous venoms and largest bodies in the world, but its stare was lethally powerful.

Anyone who made direct eye contact with it would die instantly.

Which meant, having just made eye contact with it, Link was already a dead man.

At this moment, Link was incredibly regretful. If he had known the basilisk would do a surprise attack upon opening the entrance, he should've worn sunglasses.

Even though that would still count as indirect contact with the basilisk's eyes and he'd only be turned into stone, it was still better than death.

But as time slowly passed, the shadow of death never fell upon Link.

While he felt relieved, a vague guess rose in his heart.

And while this happened, the basilisk had already emerged halfway out of the pipe, coiling itself into a small snake-loop centered around Link.

"Link! Link! My friend, you've finally come to see me!"
