"Can I touch it?"
"What? Oh, of course you can! As long as you're not afraid of it pecking you." Hearing Link's words, Professor Kettleburn patted the body of the Hippogriff cheerfully and said happily.
However, what he didn't expect was that after hearing this, Link shook his head and pointed at the Boggart Lizard above his head, saying, "No, I meant this little guy."
"Huh? You want to touch it?"
Professor Kettleburn's expression instantly turned confused. In his view, aside from a few people with special preferences, no one would want to touch this sticky, wet creature.
Even the Boggart Lizard itself was startled, tilting its head with a surprised expression.
"Yes, it's this one. Is that not okay?"
"No... of course it's okay."
Having gotten permission from Professor Kettleburn, Link didn't hesitate anymore and reached out toward the Boggart Lizard on top of the professor's head.
Professor Kettleburn was quite tall. Even with a disability, he was still much taller than Link. So, to cooperate with Link, he had to bend down, making it look like he was bowing to him.
Just then, Hagrid came out of the wooden hut holding a bottle of dark brown whiskey, and happened to witness this scene.
Crash!
The bottle in Hagrid's hand suddenly fell, shattering all over the ground.
Hagrid himself stood frozen with a blank expression. After a while, he finally came back to his senses, hurriedly cleaned up the shards on the ground in a panic, and dashed back into the wooden hut faster than he had come out.
On the other side, Link hadn't noticed Hagrid's actions at all.
At this moment, all his attention was focused on the little creature in front of him.
The Boggart Lizard seemed a bit repulsed by Link's approaching finger, showing signs of nervousness. But as soon as Link's finger actually made contact with its body, it immediately changed its attitude.
"Yaya!~"
The Boggart Lizard revealed a blissful expression, rubbing itself against Link's finger while chirping softly. It was a complete contrast to its earlier wary state.
But to its disappointment, Link quickly pulled his finger back.
"That's it?" Professor Kettleburn voiced what the Boggart Lizard was probably thinking.
"Yes, that's it for now." Link answered quickly, but his gaze was fixed on the finger that had been coated in the Boggart Lizard's slime.
At this moment, the part of the finger that had touched the slime had already begun turning translucent. Though the transparency was nowhere near as strong as the Boggart Lizard's own effect, it was enough to confirm that Link's previous speculation was correct.
The reason the Boggart Lizard could become semi-invisible was because of this transparent slime.
And this effect also worked on humans. So if this slime could be collected in large quantities, wouldn't humans also be able to become completely invisible?
Thinking this, excitement appeared on Link's face.
However, the excitement only lasted a few seconds, because soon that finger returned to normal.
At this point, Professor Kettleburn seemed to have guessed what Link was thinking. He smiled and shook his head, saying, "Relying on Boggart Lizard slime for invisibility won't work. We magical creature researchers have already tested this long ago. This slime only works best when it's on the Boggart Lizard itself. When applied to other things, it quickly loses effectiveness. If you want to be invisible, you're better off using the Disillusionment Charm!"
Link nodded thoughtfully. He didn't ask Professor Kettleburn why not just use an Invisibility Cloak. That would be too stupid.
Even with just a bit of common sense, one could figure out that a magical creature researcher and conservationist like Professor Kettleburn would never use such a cruel object made from the skin of a Demiguise.
Still, Link didn't quite agree with what Professor Kettleburn had said.
You had to understand, although the professor was quite accomplished in the field of magical creature research, he ultimately wasn't a potioneer. It was inevitable that he'd lack expertise in the precise use of magical creature materials.
Taking a deep breath, Link decided to continue researching this area. If it didn't work out, he could always go ask Professor Snape.
After all, if this research succeeded, not only could the Merlin Order medal situation be perfectly resolved, but Link could also obtain a simple and fast method of invisibility.
Of course, speaking of invisibility, the Disillusionment Charm was still more convenient. But the Disillusionment Charm was a restricted spell. Link didn't think Snape or anyone else would be willing to teach it to him.
Thinking this way, Link turned to Professor Kettleburn and said, "Professor, could you lend me this Boggart Lizard for a while?"
"Lend it to you? Well, I suppose it's not impossible," Professor Kettleburn replied, pretending to think it over. "But this is an extremely rare creature. I only lend it to my official students for research."
As soon as he said that, the corners of Link's mouth curled upward. He smiled and said, "Becoming your student would absolutely be my honor."
Link agreed so quickly that it caught Kettleburn off guard. But soon, hearty laughter burst from his mouth.
"Hahaha! Link, you made the right choice! You should have done this long ago! Hahaha!"
As he spoke, Professor Kettleburn patted Link's shoulder with his one good hand.
He was very strong, which made Link's smile a bit distorted from the force.
But Professor Kettleburn, who was clearly in high spirits, didn't notice the small details. He turned and shouted toward the wooden hut:
"Hagrid! What's taking you so long with the whiskey! Hurry up and bring me the Firewhisky, I need to celebrate!"
"Eh! Eh! Coming, Professor!"
Hearing this, Hagrid ran out of the hut with a bottle of alcohol in both hands, stumbling along the way until he reached Kettleburn.
His expression was very nervous, especially when he looked at Link. This gave Link the strange illusion that Hagrid seemed to be afraid of him.
"Ha! This is great!" Professor Kettleburn chugged a mouthful of alcohol and said, "Link, let me introduce you, this is Hagrid, one of my former students. Now he's the gamekeeper at Hogwarts! You two should get along well!"
"I know. Hagrid and I have already met, we're friends." Link spoke slowly, though his eyes kept wandering across Hagrid.
There was no helping it, Hagrid, this big guy, was acting like a timid little schoolboy in front of Kettleburn. It was honestly too comical.
Of course, Professor Kettleburn didn't find it strange at all. Once he learned that Link and Hagrid already knew each other, he got even more excited and went on to chat with them about magical creatures and future plans for over half an hour, before finally allowing Link to leave the hunting ground with the Boggart Lizard.
By then, Professor Kettleburn had already finished an entire bottle of Firewhisky and was completely drunk.
Looking back at Kettleburn being helped into the hut by Hagrid, Link shook his head, hugged the Boggart Lizard, and walked back toward the original class location.
He planned to announce the end of class, after all, looking at Kettleburn's current state, it was unlikely he'd be able to teach anymore today.
