The sun was already high when the team gathered at the site. Cement trucks rumbled in the distance, and the clatter of steel echoed through the open air. Everyone was in motion — except for one pair of eyes that kept drifting toward a certain someone.
Zain stood by a stack of steel rods, lifting and aligning them with ease. Sweat shimmered on his skin under the sun, his sleeves rolled up, exposing strong forearms that had clearly seen years of honest work. His brow furrowed slightly in concentration — and Elena found herself… staring.
Again.
She quickly turned her face to her tablet, tapping randomly like she was checking something important.
Qis nudged her side with a grin."Caught staring again?"
"Shut up." Elena's voice was flustered but amused.
"You could at least try to be subtle."
"I was being subtle," Elena whispered through clenched teeth.
Zain looked over just then, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. Their eyes met for a split second — just long enough to make her pulse skip.
He smiled.
Elena looked away instantly.
As the day went on, Elena moved through the site doing inspections and measurements, trying her best to keep things professional. But Zain seemed to appear everywhere she went. Coincidence? Maybe. But she was beginning to suspect otherwise.
At one point, she was balancing on a plank to inspect a column when she heard a voice behind her.
"You shouldn't stand like that. It's not safe."
She turned — startled — to find Zain right behind her.
"I'm fine," she said, regaining balance. But just then, the plank shifted slightly. She stumbled.
Zain caught her instantly.
Both froze.
His arms were around her waist. Their faces were inches apart. Her breath caught in her throat.
"Told you," he murmured.
For a heartbeat, the world seemed to pause — the sounds of construction melted away, and all she could hear was her own heartbeat thudding in her ears.
"You can let go now," she said softly, though she didn't really mean it.
He did. Slowly.
She cleared her throat and turned back to her notes, cheeks burning.
Later during break, they sat under the same canopy for the first time. Qis had gone to buy drinks, leaving them alone.
Zain took a sip of water and glanced at Elena, who was doodling in her notebook.
"Are you always this serious when you work?" he asked.
She looked up. "Why? Do I seem too intense?"
He gave a small shrug. "You seem… careful. Like someone who carries more than just the job."
Elena blinked, surprised by the observation."And you seem like someone who's very quiet… until he isn't."
That earned a rare chuckle from him.
They looked at each other again — no teasing this time. Just quiet understanding.
For once, neither of them had to say anything more.
That evening, as the sun began to dip into gold and orange hues, Elena walked past Zain's workstation, pretending to check a blueprint.
"Don't forget to be careful," he said gently, not even looking up.
She paused, a smile tugging at her lips."Don't worry," she replied. "I've got someone watching out for me."
Zain finally looked up. And smiled.
She walked away, cheeks warm.
He watched her go.
And for the first time in years…
…he found himself looking forward to tomorrow.
