The tension finally snapped the next morning.
They'd been walking for hours, not a word spoken between them. The trees were quiet. The air heavy. It was as if even Valoria was holding its breath — waiting for the fallout.
"I'm just saying," Braydon muttered, "maybe we should stop pretending like everything's fine."
KJ didn't look at him. "No one's pretending."
"Really? Because Shoto almost exploded and cooked us all, and everyone's just acting like that didn't happen."
Shoto stopped walking.
Elizabeth stepped closer to him, protective.
"Back off," she said sharply.
"I'm not attacking him," Braydon snapped. "I'm being real. We've got powers we can't control, monsters chasing us, and some of us—" he threw a glance at Pate "—keep acting like this is some lightshow instead of a deathtrap."
"Say that again," Pate warned, light sparking at his fingertips.
Braydon squared up. "Gladly."
"Enough!" KJ's voice cut through the air, louder than anyone expected. "We're not going to survive if we keep turning on each other."
But it was too late.
Shoto turned, voice low. "Maybe we're not supposed to."
A long silence followed. Even the wind stilled.
Finally, Pate stepped forward. "I'm out. I need space. We all do."
Braydon nodded. "Good. Thought I'd never hear you say it."
"I'm not staying with any of you," KJ muttered, eyes darker than usual. "Not until I can trust myself."
And just like that… they turned.
Braydon headed west without a word.
Pate walked toward the distant cliffs.
KJ turned north, into the fog, silent.
Elizabeth looked to Shoto.
He didn't say anything.
She reached out and took his hand.
"We'll find answers," she whispered. "Together."
He nodded once, and they turned away, heading deeper into Valoria — just the two of them.
⸻
The Splinter Paths Begin
Pate wandered into uncharted land — trees twisted, sky pale.
There, buried beneath ivy and stone, he found something forgotten:
A staircase. A passage.
And at the end, a figure sitting cross-legged on a slab of broken marble, eating fruit like it was no big deal.
"Name's Gage," he said, smiling. "About time someone else showed up."
Pate grinned. "You're not from here either, are you?"
"Nope. But I'm starting to like it."
⸻
KJ walked alone through blackened woods. The deeper he went, the louder the voice became.
It wasn't just whispering now.
It was inside him.
"They'll abandon you. You know they will."
He gritted his teeth.
But still… he walked.
⸻
Braydon came upon a broken stone gate. And sitting at its edge was a stranger — tall, calm, unreadable.
Name: Riven.
"You want strength?" he said. "I can give it to you. No rules. No guilt. Just power."
Braydon stared at him — and followed.
⸻
Shoto and Elizabeth discovered a path hidden beneath roots and vines.
At the end: a sealed chest.
Inside: a torn map of Valoria, a journal with half-translated runes…
And a massive, rune-etched key with no lock in sight.
"We're meant to find something," Elizabeth said.
"We're meant to change something," Shoto replied.
They didn't know…
They were being watched.
